The EQS is an all-electric ultraluxury sedan. The EQS580 sedan we tested is super-quick and very quiet, rides comfortably, and handles with agility, thanks to the standard four-wheel-steering system.

The brakes feel disconcertingly spongy, and the pedal eerily moves on its own during aggressive regenerative braking. The rear-drive 450+ models have a single electric motor and the 580 4Matic has a motor on each axle, giving it all-wheel drive. EPA-estimated ranges are 350 and 340 miles, respectively. We got 380 miles in our highway range test. The driving position is compromised due to the high mounted instrument panel, and the rear seat isn't as spacious as the car's size would indicate. The controls look impressive but are distracting to use.

The EQS, a large luxury all-electric sedan, is loosely based on the redesigned Mercedes-Benz S-Class and becomes the company's new flagship. It is available in two powertrains, the rear-wheel-drive 450+ with an electric motor that cranks out 329 hp, and the high-end 580 4MATIC that outputs 516 hp through a motor on each axle.

Both versions have a 108-kWh battery pack and an EPA estimated range of 350 miles for the rear-wheel drive, and 340 miles for the all-wheel drive. The massive MBUX infotainment system uses three screens and comes with all the latest technology and features. In addition to standard active safety features such as AEB, BSW, and rear cross traffic assist, the EQS goes further to predict imminent collision by using systems which will inflate the seat's side bolster to move the driver or passenger a few extra inches away from the point of an impending impact.
