Toyota is recalling 2023–2024 Prius hybrids and Prius Prime plug-in hybrids because water can short-circuit the rear electronic door latches. The automaker advises that if the doors are not locked, they can open while the vehicle is traveling or in a collision, risking injury, or worse, to passengers.

Due to insufficient waterproofing of the door opener switch, if a large amount of water splashes on the switch (like at a car wash), there is a possibility that the water could cause a short circuit. If an unlocked door opens unexpectedly, there will be a notification in the instrument panel and a buzzer will sound if the vehicle is in motion.

The action involves 55,000 cars in the U.S. and a total of 211,000 worldwide. Toyota issued a stop-sale, meaning dealerships are not able to sell new Prius cars until both the right and left rear door opener switches are replaced with improved ones. Dealers have been told this remedy will be available in the third quarter of 2024.

Until the recall fix is conducted, Toyota recommends owners ensure that the automatic door lock feature is active.

The automaker advises that the automatic door lock feature will help prevent rear door opening in the event of a short-circuit. The cars are delivered with this feature turned on. Customers can refer to the owner’s manual for instructions on how to activate this feature if necessary. If you are still uncertain, or require further assistance, contact your authorized Toyota dealer.

Owners will be notified by mail in June 2024.

    Toyota Prius Recall Details

Vehicles recalled: 2023–2024 Toyota Prius hybrids and Prius Prime plug-in hybrids

The problem: Water can short-circuit the rear electronic door latches, allowing the doors to open when the vehicle is in motion.

The fix: Dealerships will replace the right and left rear door opener switches with improved ones, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners can contact Toyota customer service at 800-331-4331.

NHTSA campaign number: 24V274000. Toyota’s numbers for this recall are 24TB06 and 24TA06.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
