Do Not Drive Older Nissan and Infiniti Vehicles With Dangerous Recalled Airbags

Federal safety regulators warn that these faulty Takata airbags are more likely to kill or seriously injure occupants

If you or someone you know owns a 2002 through 2006 Nissan Sentra sedan, a 2002 through 2004 Nissan Pathfinder SUV, or a 2002 through 2003 Infiniti QX4 SUV, stop driving it immediately and check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s official Recalls page to see if it has a dangerous recalled Takata airbag.

    MORE ON RECALLS

If it needs a recall, you should not drive it until a Nissan or Infiniti dealership replaces the airbag for free. The automakers can fix it at your home or work or tow your car to the dealership free of charge. In some cases, they will offer a loaner vehicle while yours is being repaired.

Over 67 million faulty Takata airbags have already been replaced in vehicles made by 34 brands, an effort that NHTSA has called “the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history.” The airbags have been associated with 27 deaths and more than 400 injuries in the U.S.

NHTSA says that 83,920 Sentras, Pathfinders, and QX4s are still on the road today with dangerous unrepaired airbags that could spray metal shards throughout the passenger cabin—a potentially deadly outcome from a supposedly lifesaving device. High humidity, high temperatures, and age can increase the risk.

    Nissan Takata Recall Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • 2002 through 2006 Nissan Sentra sedans
    • 2002 through 2004 Nissan Pathfinder SUVs
    • 2002 through 2003 Infiniti QX4 SUVs

The problem: In a crash, an unrepaired Takata airbag could spray metal shards at occupants, potentially killing them.

The fix: Nissan and Infiniti dealers will repair the airbags, free of charge. They are offering mobile repair or free towing, and free loaner cars when necessary.

How to contact the manufacturer: Nissan customers can call 800-647-7261 or go to the Nissan Takata recall website, and Infiniti customers can call 800-662-6200 or go to the Infiniti Takata recall website.

NHTSA campaign number: The original campaign numbers are 20V008 and 20V747.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
