    BMW X3 Road Test
    Introduction

The third-generation X3 picks up and improves upon where the previous version left off, keeping its title as one of the best-driving compact SUVs. The X3 proves itself to be impressively talented, thanks to its desirable blend of driving enjoyment, comfort, luxury, utility, and high-tech features. One of the first things you notice about the X3 is how quiet and pampering the cabin is, and how supportive the seats are. The new X3 also turns out to be slightly roomier and more fuel efficient than the model it replaced.

The BMW's turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers ample power that's polished and nearly immediate when you step on the accelerator. The superbly smooth and responsive eight-speed automatic transmission shifts quickly. This powertrain helps make this BMW SUV thoroughly engaging to drive, yet at 24 mpg overall, the X3 remains among the most economical in its class, albeit using premium fuel.

Right away, you'll notice that the X3's handling is taut and agile, making it engaging and confidence-inspiring to drive. Although its ride quality skews to the firm side, the X3 does a good job soaking up ruts, bumps, and other road imperfections.

The performance-oriented M40i version is even more engaging with its 382-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine, baritone sound, and even tauter suspension.

Clearly, BMW has upped the ante with this X3, and created an inviting interior that proves comfortable for the long haul. The cabin is constructed with rich materials that are impeccably assembled. The stitching on the leather seats and other surfaces instills an innate, high-quality feel.

The standard 10-way power seats are supportive and provide all-day comfort. The rear seat provides ample room for two adults, though none of the vehicles in this class are generous in the back. Access is easy, and even young children won't have any problem scrambling up into the cabin. Cargo room is modest, but it's so nicely finished, you wouldn't want to mess it up anyway.

Drivers have a good view from the roomy cockpit, and the optional Park Distance control alerts you when approaching objects during parking.

The controls, including the latest iDrive infotainment system and its screen, are well-executed. The optional head-up display is superb. Not only does it project the speed onto the lower part of the windshield in front of the driver, but it also shows audio and phone information momentarily when the steering-wheel controls are used. Apple CarPlay capability is a welcomed convenience.

Overall, the X3 is a thoughtfully designed machine thanks to its agility, luxury, utility and attention to detail. It definitely sets a high standard for this increasingly popular class.
