Course Description
The standardization of massive and critical machine type communications (MTC) by 3GPP has provided a robust and flexible framework for the cost-efficient, wide-scale deployment of a plethora of new use cases. Relevant technologies have been standardized for both LTE and 5G/NR, currently receiving a lot of focus by Mobile Network Operators, equipment vendors and IoT solution providers. In this context, the involved Engineering, R&D and technical management personnel not only need to assimilate the technical aspects of the available MTC solutions but are also required to consider new and diverse network architectures, design methodologies and performance metrics.
This course provides a thorough understanding of MTC over 3GPP radio access, with a focus on LTE and 5G/NR. At first, an overview of the IoT framework is provided, including the relevant capabilities, use cases and standardization efforts. Next, the two main categories of MTC, namely, massive MTC (mMTC) and ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC), also referred to as critical MTC (cMTC), are thoroughly explained, focusing on the relevant technical requirements, the air interface implementation, and the involved procedures.
The special MTC cases of UAV and V2X communications, as well as the recently introduced 5G/NR RedCap, are also included in the course, with focus on the relevant use-cases and the air interface implementation.
Finally, the evolution of MTC towards 6G is explained.
Through engaging topic discussion, including presentations of relevant case studies, participants in this course will develop a profound and robust understanding of the subject matter in a very short period of time.
Advanced Topics in Wireless: 5G NR, MTC, and Open RAN Course Series
Participants taking the three courses in the Advanced Topics in Wireless series will develop a comprehensive view on the 5G/NR technology, a profound understanding of the implementation aspects of all the ITU-specified use case categories, i.e. enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), mIoT and URLLC, and a robust foundation on the network architecture evolution technology enablers towards fully open radio access networks. Complete all three courses in this series to earn a digital badge.
Special note: This course is one of three courses in the Advanced Topics in Wireless series. The three courses in this series include:
- 5G RAN and Core Network: Architecture, Technology Enablers and Implementation Aspects, 16-17 October
- O-RAN: Disrupting the Radio Access Network through Openness and Innovation, 30-31 October
- Machine Type Communications in 5G and Beyond, 13-14 November
