What's the Story?
UNO MÁS, ONE MORE tells the sweet story of Don Manuel and Doña Lila, who love welcoming others into their home—no one is ever turned away. This couple, with a big heart, lives in a small casita or little house with their five kids and a long list of animals. Soon, their tiny casita fills with an ever-growing number of guests, each bringing their bit of joy—laughter, music, and stories. One day, as their casita overflows with friends and loved ones, the little house begins to shake and crack, causing chaos before everyone rushes out. To the family's dismay, their beloved home collapses. But where there is goodwill, there is also a way. The community gathers to help the family rebuild. This vibrant Latino retelling of a famous Scottish folktale celebrates kindness, community, and the selfless gesture of giving back.
Is It Any Good?
Silvia López's engaging retelling and Olivia Sua's detailed illustrations make Uno Más, One More a captivating read for young children. Although the story takes a slight turn when the overflowing little house begins to crack from the sheer number of guests, the situation is quickly and positively resolved. The community comes together to rebuild it even stronger, highlighting the importance of resilience and working together through challenges. Sua's painted pieces of mixed-media paper create delightful illustrations that help retell this Scottish folktalke with a Mexican twist.
