Now that Samsung has unveiled the new Z Flip 6 at its Galaxy Unpacked event, we can at last compare the other clamshell foldable that launched last month, the Motorola Razr Plus 2024. While we've formally reviewed the latter and only just seen the former, we can still compare specs and show how the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 vs. Motorola Razr Plus 2024 showdown shakes out on paper.

The rivalry between these two foldables goes back to when the first versions of the Razr and Z Flip launched in 2020, and they've each come a long way since, releasing various versions with bigger cover screens up to today, when both have exterior displays that cover nearly the whole front of either phone. Unlike book-style foldables, these two clamshells unfold to a traditional smartphone size and close up to have half the footprint, making them easier to slip into a pocket or bag -- and the Galaxy Z Flip and 6 Razr Plus 2024 are the best versions of these phones yet, though with several differences.

For some, price is the most important issue, and Samsung chose to make its foldables $100 more expensive this year. The Z Flip 6 has a launch price of $1,100, while the Razr Plus remains at $1,000.

Otherwise, the biggest difference is in the external screen, visible when the clamshell is folded closed. Technically, the Razr Plus 2024's 4-inch cover display is larger, though it extends around the two outer camera lenses; the Z Flip 6's 3.4-inch screen simply has a cutout for its outer cameras, so size is a bit of a wash. But the Razr Plus's screen is superior in its HD resolution (1,272 x 1,080 pixels) with a maximum 165Hz refresh rate for a likely sharper and smoother picture compared to the Z Flip 6's 720p (720 x 748 pixel) resolution and 60Hz maximum refresh rate.

When unfolded flat, both phones have roughly similar inner displays, with the Z Flip 6 sporting a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen (2,640 x 1,080 pixels) with up to a 120Hz refresh rate, while the Razr Plus packs a 6.9-inch pOLED (2,630 x 1,080 pixels) screen with up to a 165Hz refresh rate. With that slightly larger screen, the Razr Plus is slightly longer and wider than the Z Flip 6, though it has the same thickness.

Cameras are another area where the foldables differ. While both have a 50-megapixel main camera, the Z Flip 6 opts for a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera for its second rear shooter, while the Razr Plus goes with a 50-megapixel 2x telephoto camera -- a switch Motorola told CNET Managing Editor Patrick Holland was made because users were taking more zoom shots than ultrawide ones. While that makes the Razr Plus a bit less useful for group shots when taking selfies while folded closed, it could be more useful in the phone's overall kit. When the phones are unfolded, the Z Flip 6 has a 10-megapixel selfie camera above its inner display while the Razr Plus has a 32-megapixel one.

Both foldables have slightly different hardware, too. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 has the most powerful of Qualcomm's mobile chips with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, while the Razr Plus 2024 has the slightly less powerful Snapdragon 8S Gen 3, which Holland found came in behind last year's Galaxy Z Flip 4 (and its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset) in benchmarks, though he didn't notice any performance slowdown. Both phones have 12GB of RAM, and the Razr Plus only comes in one configuration with 256GB of storage, while the Z Flip 6 has both 256GB and 512GB options

For software, both phones run Android 14 out of the box, and the Galaxy Z Flip 6 gets seven years of updates. That's far more, and closer to the industry standard (Google pledges the same for its current Pixel line), than the Razr Plus, which only gets three years of Android and four years of security updates.

Last, but not least for some buyers, the phones also differ in colors offered. The Z Flip 6 comes in yellow, a light green mint, dark gray silver shadow and a powdery blue in retail stores, though you can also get it in crafted black, peach and white if buying online at Samsung.com. The Razr Plus comes in four vibrant hues: the iconic hot pink, light green, dark blue and a yellow-ish peach fuzz.

That's the rundown on the differences between these two clamshell foldable titans -- here's the full list of specs for folks to compare:
