Essential Equipment for Making Waffles

For a few weeks in the test kitchen, I was known as the waffle woman.

I recently updated our review of waffle makers, and to put them to the test I made over 25 waffles on six different machines. I relied on a few key pieces of equipment to make things a whole lot easier.

While you probably aren’t wrangling six different waffle makers on a leisurely Sunday morning, waffle making (especially for a crowd!) is equal parts art and science and is an exercise in organization. Things can get messy fast. Trust me.

Here’s everything you need for a seamless waffle-making experience.

1. A Liquid Measuring Cup

Depending on the style and size of your waffle maker, the volume of batter it holds varies. But once you learn the sweet spot, using the same amount for each waffle will ensure consistent waffles and make sure each waffle cooks at the same rate.

A liquid measuring cup is not only the ideal vessel for measuring but also for pouring your batter into the waffle maker.

Winner - Glass

Pyrex Measuring Cup

Pyrex won praises for a wide mouth, comfortable handle, and readable markings. Residual honey was removed with one easy swipe of the spatula. A bit heavy, though; not for klutzes with tile floors.

2. 9-Inch Tongs

Most waffle irons are made of nonstick materials, meaning that you should avoid using metal utensils on them. Our favorite tongs have silicone-coated tips, which won’t scratch your iron and will keep your fingers from getting burned when removing the finished waffles.

OXO Good Grips 12-Inch Tongs

The scalloped, uncoated pincers on our longtime favorite tongs felt very precise. This model was also comfortable to use, not only because of the silicone-padded handle but also because the tension didn’t strain our hands or wrists.

The Best Waffle Makers

We wanted a waffle maker that made great waffles and was a breeze to use. We tested a wide range of classic and Belgian-style waffle irons to find the best.

3. A Wire Rack and Rimmed Baking Sheet

From one recipe’s worth of batter, you’ll usually get at least two to three full waffles, depending on the size of your machine. Keeping a wire rack and a baking sheet nearby is the perfect setup for placing finished waffles; the air circulation will help them stay crisp. You can even pop them into a low-temperature oven to stay warm.

Winner

Checkered Chef Cooling Rack

Although the grid pattern on this rack is slightly larger than on the other two models, it’s reinforced with an extra support bar that runs perpendicular to the three main bars.
Winner

Nordic Ware Baker’s Half Sheet

Everything prepared in this sturdy, warp-resistant sheet cooked appropriately and evenly. Best of all, our new favorite is a few bucks cheaper than our old winner.

4. A Silicone Spatula

I love silicone spatulas so much I wrote a whole article about them. My favorite benefit is using them to scrape bowls and containers to ensure no food is wasted. When making waffles, having one on hand is necessary to make sure no batter gets left behind in the mixing bowl

Winner: Best All-Purpose Spatula

Di Oro Living Seamless Silicone Spatula—Large

This model is firm enough for scraping and scooping but also fit neatly into tight corners. Its straight sides and wide, flat blade ensured that no food was left unmixed.

How to Avoid the Lonely Waffle-Maker’s Dilemma

The worst part about making waffles for a crowd? They get cold before all of them are ready. Not anymore.

5. A Butter Storage Container

You can get wild with your waffle toppings, but maple syrup and butter are nonnegotiables. A butter storage container, such as a butter bell, keeps your butter fresh yet soft, making it easier to spread on your waffle. A plus: It looks cute on your table when you’re serving your friends or family brunch.

Best Butter Bell

The Original Butter Bell Crock

The large, easy-to-grasp knob on the lid of this model gave it an edge over other butter bells. The water formed an airtight seal, so butter remained a uniform and sunny color throughout testing.

6. A Waffle Maker, Of Course!

We recently instated a new Belgian waffle maker winner, the Breville Smart Waffle 4 Slice. It was incredibly straightforward to use and consistently churned out waffles that were crisp on the outside and moist on the inside.
