Born in Jacksonville, Oregon, in 1956, Andrew Kennest has always had a passion for plants, extreme sports, cooking healthy food, and long walks in the wilderness, where he has also learned how to survive in the most severe off-grid conditions, far away from any supermarket or modern comfort.

A sunny and friendly man with a difficult past behind him. At the age of 6, Andrew Kennest lost both of his parents and one of his two brothers to a violent hurricane. This tragical event instilled in him the awareness that nature is as fascinating as it is unpredictably dangerous and that the worst can happen anytime. When he was 25, he started following some local groups related to the so-called Prepper movement, becoming a well-known authority in the field in a few years. His books are considered a real bible by anyone interested in this world.

“I love sharing the knowledge I accumulated during my entire life, and the opportunity to have my books published is so meaningful for me. If I can help even only one person on the Earth with the information within them, this is what I call success.”

This is an excellent book that I will be using as a helpful tool for a long time. It's filled with fantastic information, tips and advice. In addition to wanting to educate ourselves about foraging, my husband and I are wanting to start growing our own edible plants and berries. The author truly covers everything we were wanting to know, plus more. The pictures are super helpful and the recipes were a great addition.

“The New Foraging Bible for Beginners,” is indeed a bible that opens the gateway to a free, super healthy, supply of food. These 171 pages of well-researched information by Andrew Kennest, helps the reader to locate, identify and prepare healthy and delicious edible wild plants. The reader is equipped with tips and tools to practice ethical foraging, and to harness wild plants that can be used for sustenance or medicinal purposes.
There are numerous tips to educate and prepare the forager for success. Tips include ethical foraging, how to differentiate edible from medicinal and poisonous plants, how to harvest and finding seasonal wild plants to forage all year long, and so on. The author details safety precautions in a list of dos and don’ts. For example, you should begin with harvesting familiar plants. Further, plants with three leaves such as poison ivy should not be handled or eaten. Also, since many edible and medicinal plants grow in the wild, in unused places and along roadways, be aware of the region, so you collect plants that are devoid of pollutants. Instructions are clear and easy to assimilate.
From the author’s encyclopedia, I learned that there are numerous edible wild plants. These include, mushrooms, wild berries, asparagus, fiddleheads, persimmons, crab apples, pinenuts and numerous others. I certainly learned about the benefits of daisy, stinging nettle and other weeds that always inhabit my back yard, in addition to growing in the wilds.
Needless to say, the author provides a great deal of detail about each plant. This is to ensure that the forager can identify the plant properly. Moreover, in addition to descriptive detail, I especially liked the numerous colored pictures provided to help in plant identification. Furthermore, the pictures add to the appeal and make the book more visually appealing.
There are numerous recipes to delight your palate. These include wild salad greens, violet flower syrup, dandelion presto, watercress and avocado smoothie and many more. Undoubtedly, this book can help you to effectively harvest and utilize edible wild plants. There is also a lot of extra content: ‘The ultimate Foraging Journal,’ ‘Herbal Remedies,’ and ‘How to Survive in the Wilderness.’ Further each plant comes with a unique “magic,” QR code that can be scanned to provide you with a close -up view of the plant.
The author provides a disclaimer to remind the readers, never to eat wild plants they cannot fully identify and to always seek advice from a professional before using a plant medicinally. Further, the book cannot replace professional or medical advice.
The book is very informative and an excellent source of knowledge about the fundamentals of foraging as well as a variety of therapeutic herbs. If you spend a lot of time in the wilds or out camping, this book is certainly for you.

This book is a good option for those new to foraging, such as myself. I am starting to research more on edible plants, especially those found in our area, and found this book to be a good resource. It’s laid out well and provides excellent information, safety tips, recipes, preparation tips, and more. I also learned what I thought was a pesky weed in my yard is actually edible!

There are several rules to follow when foraging for herbs and berries. Always go with an experienced person, someone who knows the difference, by sight, between a healthy plant, and one which can kill you. If you find a plant near a main road, or a plowed field, don't touch it. The plant is probably full of pesticides, or pollution from car exhaust. If you find a lavender plant, for instance, take just part of it, don't take all of it. Leave some of the plant, so it can keep growing, and leave some of it for the next person.

This book describes how to dry or freeze your plant, to have it during the winter, or to preserve your berries. It is also very acceptable to cut up the leaves of certain plants, and boil them for tea, or sprinkle them on top of a salad. This book contains pictures and descriptions of many different plants, including the poisonous ones.

Here is a book that feels very complete, and is very easy to understand. It belongs in the backpack, or on the Kindle, of everyone who forages in the woods for herbs and berries.

Before buying this book, I thought why am I? But then once I started reading it, my whole view changed. I honestly learned so much about harvesting and the world around harvesting. Such an interesting and exciting read that anyone craving to learn new things or develop new habits will enjoy this novel entirely!

I was surprised to find a great book like this, especially at a time where we need to be more resourceful with what's around us to survive. This book explains foraging, and goes even further to provide recipes as well. I learned how to tell what's edible because without that the recipes will be useless.

Well written, easy to understand and follow along with, and very helpful. This book will help you provide for a life of using what nature has to offer which is what I am looking for.

The New Foraging Bible for Beginners by Andrew Kennest is a great introduction to foraging. With generally well-written instructions that cover most aspects of what the beginning forager should know, Kennest writes a decent guide that includes peripheral areas that need to be considered, such as the concepts of Leave No Trace and other sustainable methods that have an impact on foraging. Minus a few word choices and formatting, the guide is very well-written and thorough. Kennest’s knowledge of plants comes out very well in his writing and I like how he includes a picture of some of the plants he lists. I would give The New Foraging Bible for Beginners a 4-stars out of 5 and would recommend it to other beginning foragers.
