Awakening the Soul Kindle Edition

"Awakening the Soul" addresses the issue of the loss of soul throughout the world and the loss of meaning and truth in modern life. Michael Meade shows how meaning is essential to the human soul and uses ancient stories and compelling insights to describe how soul can be recovered and people can learn to live in truth. Drawing from dramatic episodes in his own life, Meade shows how the soul tries to awaken at critical times, and how an awakened soul is crucial for finding medicine to treat the ailments and alienation of modern life. What we need now is not a minor repair, but a major transformation of the world that can only start with the awakening of the individual soul.

Editorial Reviews

Review

In reading Michael Meade s work, as in listening to his wisdom in any form, I am amazed at the high quality of love he imparts to a love starved, deeply fractured, humanity. He challenges us to go deeper into the cracks and crevices of our lives to grow a self that remains upright and of service to a tragically troubled world. --Alice Walker

Brilliant and necessary. Michael Meade offers deep medicine for our cultural anxieties, myths that empower, and profound and timeless insights. These ancient stories and modern illuminations offer the very understandings we need in these hard times. --Jack Kornfield

Michael Meade is awake, his stories, particularly the dramatic tales of his own life, are amazing, deepening and full of clarifying awareness. --Coleman Barks

Today's world is dark, perhaps it's that we know so much more than before about our ways, or just that our patterns have led us astray as to what is truly good for us. Whatever it is that ails you about life in general, this book gives you HOPE and the courage to shift your perspective towards deeper meaning so that we can use the messages that come from the dark to increase the light. This book gave me insights to truths such as the idea that chaos cannot exist without beauty and vis versa.

The beauty of Meade’s approach — and it is beautiful, connected to body and bone — is that like a writer writing a book, he gets lost in the stories and in finding his way through it/them they seem to carry him along, a river rushing forward, murmurs, gurgles, echoes, a sonorous whoosh, together with the reader to new vistas, new places of exciting challenge, humbling insight and unexpected personal discovery. The reader gets the feeling that the author is not so much teaching as if from the front of the room or even Ted-Talk style as hunkered down or leaning against the bar or in a deep cushioned straight back chair in front of the fire being taught by the stories, the Elders’ Wisdom compacted into them, and sharing the transformative experience with others. Meade knows his stuff. Meade has lived his stuff. And he tells his stuff in a way that invites connection, communion and maybe even conversion to a recognition that we really are such stuff as dreams are made of, timeless myths and ancient stories that echo through our most mundane thought and ordinary action providing, if we have ears to hear and welcome them, a way not out but through our darkest collective and personal dilemmas. Highly Recommended.

In Awakening the Soul Michael Meade weaves three strands into a compelling, important and necessary book. Using traditional wisdom stories, his own dramatic life experiences and a philosophy born from years of study, he presents a book that provides a path for change. Not the kind of sweeping but unrealistic change that some hope can overthrow a culture gone wrong, but a way to think about one’s own place and importance in the entire scheme of things.
Michael reaches back to tribal and ancient wisdom to encourage each of us to awaken our own soul, the unique, gifted part of ourselves that we have somehow forgotten, and then give our gifts to the world.
I have studied with Michael for almost thirty years. Using this idea of personal gifts changed my teaching style with the young people I worked with (still am). I know that the ideas work from personal experience.
Michael Meade’s newest book is essential reading for anyone wishing for a more meaningful life.

Meade's work consistently leads the reader towards a fully inhabited and expressed life. Using the wisdom of story, myth and personal insight, his writing counters the despair and distress of modernity that can overwhelm the best of us. I have given it to young adults who praise its insights and encouragement to live what uniquely calls them in life. Elegant offerings from a generous teacher who shares wisdom from having cultivated authentic curiosity for life and from living his fully.
