Chasing the Blue Sky Kindle Edition

“Sometimes, you find something that makes you remember that life is bigger than your day to day world. This is the book.” – Green Gables Book Reviews

“This is one of the most beautiful books I have read.” – Pamela King, Author of For the Love of a Dingo

Toby is a lovable, young pit bull mix who hits the jackpot when he finds a home with an adoring family. Between play dates with new friends from obedience class to romping around with the family kids, he couldn’t ask for anything more.

But one day, life takes a sudden turn and Toby finds himself caught in the rough and tumble world of the county animal shelter. Although scared and confused, he soon learns he’s not alone. A motley cast of shelter dogs and a devoted pair of shelter workers, each with stories of their own, will do anything to make sure Toby finds his forever home.

Chasing the Blue Sky is a true tale of the underdog, written for anyone who has ever rescued or adopted their best friend.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is deeply penetrating and thoughtful. The writing is beautiful, full of innocence but also depth. This is a quick and impactful read that should be kept on hand for anyone wanting to promote shelter adoptions!" - Literary Titan

"It is superbly written, evenly paced with well-developed characters. Its happy and sad moments will touch your heart. Its beautiful words and message stayed on my mind for days and even had me looking closer at my own dogs and their body language." - Pamela King, Author of "For the Love of a Dingo."

"Lowrey's shelter employees and canine inmates speak so eloquently in this book about a broken and tragic system. Chasing the Blue Sky is a sorely needed reminder of those cast-off dogs waiting and hoping for new families to come and find them. It's most highly recommended" - Readers' Favorite

"Most of us try our best to treat our animal friends well, but we make as many mistakes as they do in trying to interpret what each other needs. That's life. But, we can always learn to do better. "Chasing the Blue Sky' made me want to do better." - Good Kindle Reviews

"This is a beautifully, well written book, easy to read with great world building. This could easily be a book for animal advocates or people hoping to deter people from surrendering, I wouldn't be surprised if copies ended up in lobbies of shelters." - My Book Nook

"Chasing the Blue Sky approaches animal rights in a way that is both empathetic and constructive. The novel is filled with emotional, heart-wrenching scenes that are not for the faint of heart, especially those who are animal lovers. Lowrey's novel does more than just tell a sad story; it confronts the injustices those who do not have a voice face, yet these forgotten ones show resilience and love anyway." - The Book Review Directory

WILL LOWREY is an attorney and animal rights advocate from Richmond, Virginia. He holds a juris doctor from Vermont Law School and a Bachelor of Science from Virginia Commonwealth University.

After 20 years in the corporate world, Will embarked on a more fulfilling endeavor and entered law school to pursue a career in animal law. During law school, Will interned with an animal crimes prosecution unit and a non-profit filing civil suits on behalf of animals. In 2017, Will graduated from law school after only two and a half years.

For close to two decades, both before and after law school, Will has been actively involved in animal causes. His experiences include deployments to assist animals in disasters, the closure of roadside zoos, caring for animals from dog and cock fighting cases, community outreach for low income pet owners in areas ranging from urban neighborhoods to Native American reservations, animal rights protests, animal sheltering, public records campaigns against large institutions conducting animal research, and countless other adventures.

While Will has always been a casual writer of fiction including short stories, and poems, he recently discovered the world of self-publishing and was immediately engrossed. His first novel, “Chasing the Blue Sky,” has been regularly featured in the Top 10 animal rights books on Amazon, received acclaim from numerous blogs and review sites, and was produced as an audiobook. Will has since published several additional works on animal rights and is actively working on more. Will also authored the legal article “We the Pit Bull: The Fate of Pit Bulls Under the United States Constitution” published in the Lewis and Clark Animal Law Review Journal, Volume 24, Issue 2.

Through each page of Toby's story, I hoped that he would get his miracle. From his poorly treated sad mother's experience to the final word, this story grabbed me by the heart and refused to let go. My heart broke when Toby's owners surrendered him to the county animal shelter. I know county animal shelters have very little room, fewer funds, and almost no personnel so they are forced to make hard decisions about the dogs and cats in their care. It's just immensely saddening to read an account of what may have happened in one dog's life to put him in the position of being labeled an aggressive dog. This book touched me deeply and it should be required reading for inexperienced dog owners who are considering adoption from any animal shelter. I have been the recipient of the unconditional love of many dogs, and I wouldn't trade that for anything. I just wish my health and finances would allow me to adopt another one.Update: I just wanted to say that I was able to rescue a blue pitbull mix from my local animal shelter. I have been training her to be my service dog because I have problems with balance and she helps me up when I fall. She can also detect a migraine headache up to 24-hours before it happens and helps with my panic attacks. Not to mention she is the sweetest dog I've ever had. I've never heard her growl, she loves people, especially children, and gets upset if she doesn't get to meet the youngest children. She especially loves my granddaughter. I'm glad I could make one dog's dream come true for Toby.

I'm trying to read this book for a second time, something I almost never do, I don't think I can. It is so heartbreaking, so accurate of how life is for so many of our pets.
Should you read it at least once? Yes! Read it surrounded by the animals who's lives you have changed.

This book was very beautifully written but heart wrenching. I kept hoping it would have a happy ending but it had a very tragic ending. Although it was a sad story, I understand why the author had to end it this way. It is a very powerful message that needed to be told. It was written from the perspective of a dog who found himself incarcerated in an animal shelter because his family no longer “had time” for him. This is a very common reason why animals are left behind and it is easy for people to rationalize their actions and naively assume that the animal will find another loving home. Not always the case in reality. So many lives are spared because of irresponsible dog ownership. That’s why it’s so important to rescue an animal whenever you can rather than buy from a breeder. There are too many lives wasted.

I have to warn you now that if tears on your face is an awesome feeling for you then read this book. I would say that for three quarters of reading my eyes were rarely dry. It's not one of those, hand to your heart, that's awful! It's one of those rip my heart out all the way through. And and it sucks that that this level of dog neglect and cruelty has been happening since the beginning of man and dog. We don't understand or accept that are interactions with dogs are a symbiotic relationship, this thinking that we are controlling dogs when this is still being done by the millions in America and all over the world. I'm pretty sure anyone who is reading this book and my review well, I'm preaching to the choir.

I read this book almost in one day. The story was so compelling, I had to know how it ended. The entire story touched on the injustice of the victims that cannot speak for themselves. I cried almost during the whole book and still as I write this review. Every person must read this book. Although animals in shelters are always freed, some times it is not in a way in which they deserve. I began reading the book with my 9 year old who like me, loves animals and wishes to save them all, but after about 15 pages into the book I had to stop reading it. The lessons in the book are so important for the younger generations, but it is not for the faint of heart. He cried the whole time, so I would not recommend the book for younger readers. I don't think I will ever be able to shake this story from my memory.

Just finished reading this book. It is so typical that a family gets a pup and tires of it with their busy lives. Not all families are like this but when a new baby comes along it is common. Poor Toby did not ask to be born and ended up being put to sleep because of his situation. I felt bad for Ann because she would of adopted Toby if she was financially able to. I myself have an older cocker spaniel but cannot get another dog at this time. It would not be fair to her. When the time comes we will adopt. Pitt Bills do get a bad rap but some other breeds suffer too. It is how the dogs are treated and trained. Chasing the Blue Sky was a good read that brings you to the front lines of the shelters. Shelter workers do matter and should be respected for their hard work. To put down a dog at any age is not easy. I wanted Toby to find his forever home but that was not to be for this young dog. I only hope that his littermates did not end up with the same faith as poor Toby. Please write more true stories ...not all stories end up with happy endings. Truth is what people need. Thank you Mr. Lowrey for writing this book.

I highly recommend reading this book. I read it during one long plane ride because I could not put it down. I loved the detailed descriptive writing because you really feel what the characters are feeling and understand what they are going through. This was a sad read, but it highlights some of the major problems facing animals and humans today. This book was also inspiring and reminded me to always think and act with compassion. Even as an animal advocate, I sometimes forget how little things, such as my tone or demeanor, could impact my furry friends. I have already passed this book along to my mom to read. Everyone needs to hear this message and understand that dogs and humans are not that different. We all need love, friendship, understanding, and hope.
