    My first leverless controller
    I bought this to play Street Fight 6 and Tekken 8, and I was surprised at how good this controller was for the price point. The buttons are very responsive and with so many of them I can map the extra buttons to grab, parry and drive impact for SF6. I love how you can change the SOCD and the RGB without installing any programs. The tiny display is also helpful for knowing which buttons are being pressed and the current settings of the controller. The only negative I have to say about this controller is that it is pretty ugly. I love everything else about it tho.

    I'm still a novice when it comes to fighting games but during lockdown I bought and customized a couple of Mad Catz and HORI sticks, in addition to purchasing my first leverless which was the Crush Counter v2.0 by Sleep Unit. Although I haven't been playing much lately, I started looking into Tekken 8 and came across reviews of this Haute42 controller and so I immediately jumped on the opportunity to review this S16 model when it appeared in my feed.

    Like many of the other GP2040 firmware based leverless options, this S16 model is very compact and has its PCB with small LCD display sandwiched between acrylic layers, making it easy to insert artwork. The fit and finish of the components are cleaner than my hand assembled Crush Counter (and no stuck buttons!). For some reason the S16 uses a frosted acrylic sheet on the bottom and I even tried to scratch the edges off with my fingernail hoping there was a protective layer to peel off, but I was wrong. This means you probably shouldn't use detailed artwork on the bottom as it'll be too blurry and it's especially confusing when they wrote down the list of modes supported by the board onto the back of the PCB. Luckily the font is big enough that you can still kind of read the blurry text but I suppose most people would probably affix an anti-slip pad onto the bottom anyway.

    I haven't had a chance to use the additional buttons, but I think they'll come in handy for Street Fighter 6 or Tekken for easier access to certain combinations rather than using your right pinky for the far right buttons. Updating to the newest firmware version and configuring the board was easy as is expected of the new GP2040-CE firmware (that my older Crush Counter lacks support for) although it didn't seem very intuitive to change the LED lighting. Changing the splash screen image on the LCD display and setting it to always on was easy enough, though, and to me it was the better option since the newest firmware doesn't even show the three additional buttons on the diagram in the LCD display.

    Lastly, the USB-A passthrough port is great for using dongles (and I'm assuming official controllers?) for authentication for PS4/PS5 consoles although I believe you could extract your officially licensed controller's keys and transplanted into the GP2040-CE config to bypass the check.

    If you have the time and patience it might still be cheaper and more rewarding to build your own leverless, but for a complete package (and if your primary console is not a PS4 or PS5) shipped quick through Amazon Prime, you really can't beat Haute42's offerings. Would highly recommend the S16 those wanting to try out a leverless. I'm also hoping I can review one of their larger offerings as those would be easier to keep on your lap while playing.
