The Science of Surfing: A Surfside Girls Guide to the Ocean Kindle & comiXology

The ocean is packed with plants, animals, water… and science! Ride the waves of knowledge with Sam and Jade as they explain all about the amazing wonders of the sea, and have a blast doing it. Have you ever wondered why the ocean has waves? Why the tide goes in and out? And how can coral be alive when it looks like a rock? From the pages of the beloved graphic novel series, join the Surfside Girls, Sam and Jade, for a great investigation into everything that makes the ocean so cool: from moon cycles and king tides, to why a wave breaks, to otters in kelp forests… with plenty of fun and jokes along the way. Plus, there’s a whole step-by-step chapter on how to surf! The Science of Surfing is the coolest way to take a beach vacation and learn at the same time.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4–6—California wave riders Sam and Jade move from solving ghostly mysteries in two earlier series outings to investigating real-world phenomena, including the physics of tides and waves, techniques of longboard and shortboard surfing, sea bird behavior and anatomy, kelp forest ecology, and ways of being a "good steward" of beaches, oceans, and marine wildlife. Their presentations go deep enough to include, for instance, several finely detailed animal skeletons and the mathematical formula for determining wavelength. The STEM-centric content is awash in banter, jokes ("Why did the chicken cross the ocean?" "To get to the other tide!"), and breezy reflections and enhanced by sunny cartoon panels and free-standing illustrations in which the two lanky young lecturers pose expressively with boards or precisely drawn biological specimens in sandy littoral settings. Lit up by Dwinell's unforced enthusiasm for her topic, this graphic dive into the science of sand and surf will tempt even confirmed land lubbers to catch a wave. Sam is white, while Jade is Asian. VERDICT Likely to make a big splash with middle graders, whether they're headed for the beach or biology class.—John Peters, Children's Literature Consultant, New York

Kim Dwinell likes stories more than the beach. Almost. Maybe it's a tie. She first had a career as a beach lifeguard, and then a career in animation (The Swan Princess, Cats Don't Dance, Hercules, Mulan and Tarzan,) and now combines her two loves in her first graphic novel, Surfside Girls: The Secret of Danger Point. She also teaches animation at CSU Long Beach. When she's not in the classroom or at her desk, she might be running a 10K or out on the ocean in her boat or on her board. She lives on a tree-lined street in sunny Southern California with her husband, son and Springer Spaniel.

AMAZING BOOK!

AMAZING BOOK!
I bought this at a comic convention by total random chance. I wanted l to put a review on Amazon so others would know how wonderful this book is on many different levels. My daughter loves science, I love nature and my husband loves graphic novels, so this is a win for all of us! I’m cheap and very picky when it comes to kid books. This is quality all around! Great price. The art is fabulous and helpful in explaining or showing the science. I was a little nervous buying this book for science purposes because we don’t live by the ocean, we don’t surf and we don’t live in western United States. But it doesn’t matter where you live, it is a FUN educational science book! I know I’ll learn some things that I didn’t from this book. I LOVED how the book shows and explains the moon’s gravitational pull and the new moon & full moon power. I also had the chance to meet Kim Dwinell when purchasing the book. She is very kind and lovely person. I don’t think she plans on writing more Nature books (her other two books are mystery with the same characters), but if she does, I would be the first one to purchase! I’m very old school, so go ahead and roll your eyes at my next comment… my minor complaint is that the characters in the book sometimes wear bikinis tops, which we don’t let our daughter do. I know, I know, but I warned you I’m old school.;)

This is a great book for learning about the ocean. We live a few hours away from the coast and spend a good deal of time on the beach. My kids have started asking how waves are formed so I started looking for a book to help them better understand my explanation. This one perfectly describes the process in a way that's interesting to them. And the chapters regarding sea life and other ocean phenomena are just as good. Really glad I settled on this one. Hopefully it will encourage them to try surfing!

This was more of an instructions book about how to surf rather then a story. However, the book was delivered in a timely manor and in good shape. 5 stars to the seller.
