This is not that. This book is Lemire at his most experimental yet, and it’s going to be be very divisive. Volume 1 left me intrigued, but if I’m being honest I probably wouldn’t have picked up Volume 2 if it hadn’t been for my love for the author’s previous works.
Before I get to the mild spoiler section:
Yes. Go back and read the first two volumes if your memory is even just a bit fuzzy. Much of this book is told in details, especially visual, that are called back to as the story goes on. This book assumes that the reader is an attentive, engaged, and intelligent person. If you’re looking for some surface level horror fun, there’s plenty of it to go around, but you’ll find little to enjoy here. Strap in, pay close attention, fall in love with the meticulous details.
***SPOILERS***
The magic of this book is honestly in the play with the writer and the artist. As Volume 2 got more abstract, Volume 3 really goes all-in and Lemire trusts the artist to tell a much large part of the story than his dialogue. The transition in style from clearly photo-based to Neo-psychedelic avant-garde horror is bewildering in the best possible ways. This will take you out of your comfort zone, then take you in a ride that makes you realize you never a a comfort zone to begin with.
Lovin it.
