I leave my house at 63ºF. I have an older cat who is getting skinny and I decided that a heated bed might help her. She's on meds that suppress her immune system and I don't want her to catch a cold... or worse. She will sleep in cat beds so after reading the great reviews about this one, I decided to purchase it.
As others have pointed out, it is a nice bed. It has zippers so you can remove the heater and clean the bed. It's soft, too.
It's hardly warm without a cat laying on it. If your cat lays on it long enough, it will feel warmer. I don't really know what to expect from 4 watt heater. Perhaps with the high sides and a cat sitting on the heater, the heat is localized and doesn't escape, which provides a stable temperature for long term use. My cat has been spending time in this bed rather than on the bed near me. A friend has one of these for his outdoor partially inside cat and his cat prefers the heated bed to unheated.
I also bought a self-warming mat for $11. It's mylar between two pieces of materia. That DOES work to keep heat in. It's like one of those light weight emergency camping "blankets". I put the mat on my lap and it warmed up my lap. Buy (or make!) a couple of those too. No electricity needed.
Update after three years: I have TWO of these beds. My old cat used the heated bed all summer this year. It has gotten chilly enough that my other old cat has started using the bed. I have had no trouble with these beds. The best money I ever spent on beds; several co-workers have purchased this bed for cats and it is a hit with all of them.
I originally gave this two stars. But after seeing how much my cats like it, I am now giving it four stars. My older cat spends a lot of time in the bed and her sneezing has stopped (for now). I have been spot checking the temp beneath the cats and it feels pretty warm. I think the heat level is just about right for a cat to spend hours sleeping in the bed without getting too warm. I think the key here that you want just the right temp to match the body heat of the cat and this bed seems to do that pretty well.
Feb 2016 update: The two beds I purchased still look great and work. A couple of years ago, my 17 year old started using the bed year round so it does not get unplugged during the summer. My other cat got sick and became incontinent and I used puppy pads to cover the pillow. After he passed, I took the bed apart and cleaned with Nature's Miracle and hand washed in warm water with laundry detergent and they look like new again! The pillow is still fluffy and has held up well. I would give this 6 stars!
October 30 2018 update. Well, the second of two cats who used these beds has passed. These two beds were on year round for at least the last five years. Excellent bed, and the price hasn't gone up. The 16" bed will hold a 20 pound cat easily.

Our cats love them
We were gifted one of these from a friend whose cat didn't take to it. Our cats seasonally liked it for a while, and while at times they've kind of managed to share, more recently....they have started to fight over it. It was nice to be able to buy an exact match. It's not the ideal look I'd pick, but nice to have them match and know the cats like them. The rim is perfect height for using as pillow.

My 10 lb cat loves this bed. I wanted someplace cozy for her too lounge on so that she could comfortably hang out while I'm sitting at my desk. This is a perfect size for her and for the space. I did need to convince her to get in the first time, since the bed doesn't heat up until there's some weight to activate it. This girl normally bolts after a while to nap in her favorite spots, but I've had this bed for a few days and she has frequently come back to lay in this bed on her own. Super sturdy, nice design, and the height of the sides is perfect for her to rest her head, which she loves. Good, low but noticeable amount of heat.
The one downside is that I've noticed she gets a low level of static if I pet her while she's in it. Doesn't seem to bother her though. I only wish I had bought this sooner! Fabulous product!

I bought one bed to test it for our cats. They both loved it immediately! So of course I had to buy a second bed. It's just as described. It heats up just enough when they are in it, and I like being able to keep it plugged in. It is soft & does not appear to hold hair. Both of my cats are high maintenance-one dislikes fuzzy blankets, one loves fuzzy blankets. This lining works for both! It looks easy to clean. The sides are some what soft, but they are firm enough to hold our "fluffy" cat! Both cats now use their bed every day, to keep warm & cozy during these winter months! Bonus, it keeps cat hair off the furniture! It is large enough for both to fit in one bed, but they prefer their own. I bought the larger size.

Read People! Read!! I've read reviews that say this bed "doesn't get warm at all!" Really!??
No. It doesn't get very warm "to the touch", Because it's pressure activated. My 9 y.o. cat "Dude" has only gotten out of it to Eat, hit the litter box, watch birds for a few, get some love, and he's right back in. And not all those things at once.
If you would read the directions, it says to place a pillow in it and wait 20 minutes so I put two pillows in it because one pillow didn't seem like enough weight, and sure enough I could feel a slight warmth to the touch. But once my cat got in there and didn't want to get out I knew it was very warm and comfy for him. I stuck my hand between him and the bed, and it was plenty warm! If he's cold he will gravitate to the portable radiator type heater that I have. He loves that heater because that's what he has stayed warm with for the past couple of years. Once in awhile he'll go hang out by that heater for a little bit until he's ready to nap then he goes and jumps back in that bed. We live in the Pacific Northwest and I'm going to say this is the best investment I've ever made for a cat!! This would also be perfect for a small dog!
When did people stop reading descriptions and directions?? I see the same type of complaint on a lot of other reviews!! :-/
