Nice, small travel router, but setup can be a headache for novices
The TP-LINK TL-WR720N is indeed tiny -- about 1/4 the size of the already diminutive Apple AirPort Express -- and serves admirably well as a travel router, wireless Access Point, wireless-to-wired bridge, or wireless repeater. Featherweight -- weighing in at just 34 grams (as much as four US quarters), the tiny little gadget feels like an empty plastic box in your hand. But plug in the micro-USB power cord (which means you can power it from any laptop USB port, cell phone charger or hotel night table USB charging port), connect it to an Ethernet cable, and you have all you need to bring Wi-Fi connectivity to a hotel, meeting room, apartment or other small space. The unit works as advertised, with one big caveat: it defaults out-of-the-box with a non-standard IP address for configuration and administration, and so getting control of the unit in order to change modes, change settings or any other user settings can be tricky.I have more than 20 years experience in PC networking, and am an experienced expert in Wi-Fi networking, home routers, switches, LAN design and so on, but it took me the better part of a frustrating hour to get control of this little unit. The cause lies in the factory default IP address TP-Link assigns to the unit: 192.168.0.254. What that means is that for most folks on home networks, the administrative IP address for this unit is in a different address block range than their computers are set to use, and so they will have to fiddle with manual IP address settings in their system's Network control panel/preferences to be able to contact the device. See my customer images for details on one way to do this on a Mac.After gaining control of the device, it behaves much like any other consumer-grade Wi-Fi router, and anyone who's dealt with a Linksys/Belkin/D-Link or other popular Wi-Fi router won't find any surprises.TP-Link does provide a handy quick-setup wizard, which lets you set the unit into one of its five operating modes quickly: Wi-Fi router, Access Point, Bridge, Client or Repeater. And I have found that I almost always use the unit as a simple Access Point, so setting it up once to use that configuration means I rarely have to twiddle with other settings in normal use.Tiny, very lightweight, good signal strength, Wi-Fi N-type compatibility, and the ability to power it from any standard USB port make this little unit a super-handy item in your travel tech kit. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of an Apple AirPort Express, but it's also MUCH smaller, and (since I bought a refurbished unit through Amazon Warehouse Deals for less than $20 shipped with my Amazon Prime membership), it's also about 1/5th the price of an AirPort Express!

right after I Purchase, the price drops from $26+ to $21+. Seems the seller has no confidence to this product.

/ordered 9/3 and got it 9/7. It is pretty fast considering free shipping.

the package looks like a high end product even though the price is only $26.xx. it is small, stands smaller than a credit card. It is thicker of course, about 3/8 inch.

If you have latest windows 7 and know a few things about wifi, the set-up is easy. My win7 computer found the TP link without problem. I simply typed in the IP address and started to quick set, as described in the user manual. I set it up as a repeater. then reboot and it starts to work.

I am planning a travel to Asia this October. Hope I can write more after that. So far, it is 5 stars.

    9/19:
Re did the repeater function. It works. But the antenna inside is weak. It means when your source signal is weak, where you need the repeater function, the unit can't work stably. It keeps dropping.

    9/20:
today, I re-tried the repeater function. this time, I put the unit in the middle of the source and the place I used it. In this situation, the connection was solid. there was no drop within 3hrs.

I also tested the bridge function. It took me a while to make it happen because there is no related info on the manual. I had to google it and found out online. Anyhow, once you connect it, it works. again, the unit has to be placed closer to the source. Otherwise, the weak antenna won't help on the connections.

since this tiny AP/Router/Repeater/Bridge is designed for travelers. The bridge or repeater function may not be critical. I can't test the AP in a hotel situation. Will let you guys know if I get a chance.

So far, it is still a 5 star product.

    I love this router!!
I was admittedly skeptical when I bought the Nano Sized TP-Link router. I was not completely sold on the fact it would serve my purposes and prove to be useful. I was outstandingly wrong...this router exceeded my expectations. I was looking for a device that allow me to produce my own wireless access point when found myself limited to wired connections. I am always on the go and it steadily became more burdensome to carry my 15.6 in. laptop around all of the time and a new smaller one was not in the budget.
When exposed to a wireless connection I could use my tablet to access my PC remotely, but when my location changed I was in a predicament. Brainstorming about my problem, I wondered if there was a such thing as a more portable router similar to what I used at home. This router was my answer. When the package arrived (in 2 days because of my Amazon Prime account) I was surprised at how compact it was, it fit in the palm of my hand!
The router came with a conventional power adapter with a USB port, USB to micro-USB cord and an Ethernet cord.
The device can be powered using the power adapter or via a USB port on a computer. The Ethernet cord is flat in design which hinders tangles. Once plugged, the device powered up immediately and it has a blue indicator light to let you know that it is on. The router appeared in the list of available WiFi connections and after straining my eyes to reads the pass-code, I was connected with internet access. The speed was very impressive for such a small device. I found myself wondering why I paid $180 for my home router.

I have had the device for more than 3 months now and it is still working great. I use it often have not had any problems with it. This router can be used to create a wireless access point or can be used to create a temporary guest access point that disappears when the device is turned off.
The device is small enough to be hooked up and go unnoticed outside of its white color and because it is so small it does not take up a great amount of space.
As I mentioned earlier, the security password is very tiny and is not easy to remember, but you can change the SSID and password to something that is more comfortable for you. Instructions can be downloaded below:

    [...]

I love the fact that I can place this router in a small protective case and keep it in my bag to create a wireless access anywhere an Ethernet cord is within view. This device is perfect for business or for play and it helps you to save money because you do not have to pay for an additional limited data plan when traveling, especially when staying with family during the summer and holidays.

My room at a university apartment doesn't get a good wireless signal. I decided to get this discrete router to use the 90 Mb/s wired connection with my phone and tablet without having to create an ad-hoc network from my laptop.

    Pros:
I can say I am very happy with it. I love the compact size and small cable. It hides away very well in a corner of my room. It also looks very good in the pastel blue color. It's a cute and very cool little device. I had actually expected it to be a bit larger. One side is approx. the length of the smaller side of a credit card. Setup wasn't hard. It comes with operating mode set to "access point" by default (which is what I needed), but it should have been configured as a router for the majority out there. But setting it up isn't as hard as most people say it is. The instruction sheet could have been clearer, though. The range is quite impressive. I can easily get a good signal from anywhere in the two-story house (with wooden walls). But I haven't tested it extensively.

    Cons:
Configuring it through the web-based interface is a bit of a hassle because one needs to manually configure the computer's IP address every single time. Almost all settings require the router to be rebooted. However, in my case, I had to disconnect and reconnect the power cable as well every time. I understand that it is a compact device, but I sometimes feel the need for a single Ethernet port on it. This is because I am not getting the promised speeds. As I said before, I have a 90 Mb/s connection when I plug it into the computer directly. However, (probably due to interference from other college routers) I am getting a lot less than that. I manually tried configuring it to all wireless channels available and still, the maximum I get is 40 Mb/s, although the maximum is promised to be 150 Mb/s, which is higher than what I have available. But 40 Mb/s is more than necessary for my *everyday* use. For large downloads, I still feel the need to be plugged in and I can't.

    Conclusion:
Great router for me as a college student. Interference from other routers gives me low speeds, but it's fine. Definitely the router you need if you wish to set up temporary networks to share files, a wired connection in a hotel etc. But you can use it as a home router if your house isn't *too* big and there isn't much interference. At $20, it's a bargain and you get quite a bit for that low a price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Das kleine, absolut geniale Gerät
Reviewed in Germany on January 31, 2016

Also keine zusätzliche Steckdose in dem Fall notwendig.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modalità client per smart TV senza scheda WiFi
Reviewed in Italy on December 20, 2015

I took on a new job recently that requires a ton of travel and many many hotel nights. Using my Xbox in a hotel wouldn't normally work because you need to login to hotel networks. This router allowed me to create my own network using the hotel's wired connection and I've been enjoying my Xbox (with Netflix) ever since.

I also am able to plug into offices that only have a wired connection and have my own, secure wireless connection. The range is fantastic considering that this device is smaller than a hockey puck and weighs less than half of one.

Setup is pretty easy, signal is stable and as noted, range is excellent.

My only negative would be that it feels like it's going to break. Still, I give it 5 stars because really, it hasn't broken and so simply feeling fragile doesn't mean it is. Months of travel and it hasn't failed me. I will also add that my co-worker returned her $95 D-Link because it didn't work on our office network and then bought herself the TP-Link.

A side note: I forgot it in the hotel one day and staff said they couldn't find it (yeah right). I ordered another from Amazon, it arrived within 2 days and I just hooked it to my laptop, the new one took on the same settings as the old one and I was ready to go. I may order another one just to have on hand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a repeater

I thought this would be a great little device. And yes, it is handy when traveling, in a hotel that only has wired internet available. But returning home and trying to use it as a repeater - useless. As other reviewers say, the manual/instructions refer to specific changes to make - on a website that does not exist. You cannot change modes - impossible to turn it into a repeater. Frustrating - maybe an issue with Bell, who I will never call for help, as that always ends with phone, internet or tv services randomly getting cut off for several days ("oops" says Bell) - but definitely not in any way useful unless traveling.
