A young journalist prompts a reclusive piano superstar to open up, resulting in this stunning graphic sonata exploring a lifetime of rivalry, regret, and redemption.

1933. In the small French village of Cressy-la-Valoise, a local piano contest brings together two brilliant young players: Julien Dubois, the privileged heir of a wealthy family, and François Samson, the janitor's son. One wins, one loses, and both are changed forever.

1997. In a huge mansion stained with cigarette smoke and memories, a bitter old man is shaken by the unexpected visit of an interviewer. Somewhere between reality and fantasy, Julien composes, like in a musical score, a complex and moving story about the cost of success, rivalry, redemption, and flying pianos.

When all is said and done, did anyone ever truly win? And is there any music left to play?

Two days after I started reading it, the book fell apart..... It is truly a great graphic novel (I love the drawing as well as how the story is written), but the book quality is so bad.

I love this story. One of the best books I’ve read this year hands down. A beautiful and well done story of a pianist, his accomplishments and failures and how he learns to be a good person. I love this story I can’t rave about it enough.

An elderly musician dying of cancer agrees to tell his life story to a pushy journalist, quite possibly as a form of confession, but both parties find healing, connection, and closure. Re-reading this graphic novel gave me even *more* feelings than I had on a first reading, and tbh I hadn't thought that was possible. It's an exceptional work, and I'm glad to own a copy because I will definitely be returning to it in the future.

Magically narrated and drawn. I really enjoyed it and finished reading it in 2 days. The choice of colors was also not usual but beautiful.

Que buena historia. Los colores le quedan mucho junto con el dibujo, pero aquí lo que se lleva todo el foco es simplemente la historia del personaje principal a través de los años... quisiera saber más, pero así es perfecta.
Dense la oportunidad de leer esto.
