Purchase options and add-ons
WIRED Magazine’s Favorite End-of-Year Books, 2018
A brand-new ongoing horror series from the acclaimed best-selling creative team of Old Man Logan and Green Arrow!
The lives of a reclusive young man obsessed with a conspiracy in the city's trash and a washed-up Catholic priest arriving in a small town full of dark secrets become intertwined around the mysterious legend of The Black Barn―an otherworldly building alleged to have appeared in both the city and the small town throughout history, bringing death and madness in its wake.
Rural mystery and urban horror collide in this character-driven meditation on obsession, mental illness, and faith that Mark Millar (Hitgirl) called his "personal pick as the best comic of 2018!" Also featuring a variant cover gallery from some of comics' best artists, including Cliff Chiang (PAPER GIRLS), Jock (WYTCHES), Skottie Young (I HATE FAIRYLAND), and more!

Review
“Sorrentino’s art offers some visually complex layouts that I found to be quite compelling. Overall, I’m really enjoying this story and the mysterious complexities it brings.” —Impulse Gamer
"A dark, brooding piece of evocative horror blessedly short on exposition and long on landscapes, ambiance and feelings." —The Oregonian
“Lemire and Sorrentino will go down as one of the greatest comic teams of all time. Gideon Falls cements that. Well, Green Arrow did, but this really REALLY does it.” —Brian Michael Bendis
"If you were a fan of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino Green Arrow or Old Man Logan, which were instant classics in the eyes of many, then check out this original story." —IGN

VERDICT Moody metaphysical horror with echoes of Twin Peaks-style strangeness establishes this mysterious world created by Lemire (Essex County; Roughneck), Sorrentino (Old Man Logan), and Stewart (Hellboy), presented in this first volume of a popular ongoing series. Collects single issues 1-6.

"Though Lemire is one of the busiest writers in the industry right now, the sheer volume, diversity, and high quality of his output is remarkable. He doesn’t lose a step here nor does Sorrentino, who is composing here at peak level too... I left the experience of Gideon Falls more than ready to see how the mystery of this odd town plays out in the next chapter." ―The Comics Beat
"It's a thriller, it's horror, it's literary, and it's also something truly unique." ―Newsarama

The story creates a strong mystery and explores the realm of believability. The pacing does well in building tension, and the characters are interesting.
The art and paneling is mostly good. As an artistic choice, the inking and shadows are loosely defined and are not solid. The shading looks like vertical hatching giving the art a slightly unsettling appearance. A few panels have a few too many words, but it isn’t common. Also some of the paneling is a little too strange for me.
The story has great build-up, but the impact of the climax is a little blunted by the unusual delivery. It gets a little too strange towards the end. I would have preferred if the author leaned more heavily into horror than strangeness.
I look forward to the next volume to see what else this creative team comes up with.
A must read!
I also believe they emphasized strangeness too much. It’s filled with strange panels and not much dialogue, adding to an already confusing story ark. I’m going to keep reading just because Lemire is my favorite author and I have faith that this series will pick up the pace. If vol 2 has not convinced yet though, I’m giving up on.
The positive side for me was the story ark with the Father Fred. I think it has a lot of potential. Norton I could care less about right now.

Gideon Falls hits the mark on everything for me. The artwork is exceptional, and the writing and character development is superior. It’s a blend of sci-fi, the supernatural, and horror thrown in for good measure. Very, very good.
