This was a much better book by Erik Larson than some of his earlier books, as he referenced a number of sources. Unfortunately, he paints a picture of the South based on the diaries and writings of a few very wealthy individuals. This presents a politically correct picture of the South. Most Southerner in 1861 were not slave owners. In Louisiana, there were blacks who owned slaves. Taking the bias out of the story, it still is a good look at the events from the Lincoln election though the Spring of 1861, with a short look at the aftermath of the principals.
