Breaking the Dark: A Jessica Jones Marvel Crime Novel Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

In her most imaginative novel yet, number one New York Times best-selling author Lisa Jewell (None of This Is True) launches the Marvel Crime series of thriller books for adults with an original story starring the private detective Jessica Jones.

Meet Jessica Jones: retired superhero, private investigator, loner. She tried her best to be a shiny spandex crimefighter, but that life only led to unspeakable trauma. Now she avoids that world altogether and works on surviving day-to-day in Hell’s Kitchen, New York.

The morning a distraught mother comes into her office, Jessica would prefer to nurse her hangover and try to forget last night’s poor choices. But something about Amber Randall’s story strikes a chord with her. Amber is adamant that something happened to her teenage twins while they were visiting their father in the UK. The twins don’t act like themselves, and they now have flawless skin, have lost their distinctive tics and habits, and keep talking about a girl named Belle. Amber insists her children have been replaced by something horrible, something “perfect”.

Traveling to a small village in the British countryside, Jessica meets the mysterious Belle, who lives a curiously isolated life in an old farmhouse with a strange woman who claims to be her guardian. Can this unworldly teenager really be responsible for the Randall twins’ new personas? Why does the strange little village of Barton Wallop seem to harbor dark energies and mysteries in its tight-knit community?

A mother’s intuition is never wrong. And Jessica knows that nothing in life is perfect—not these kids, not her on-again, off-again relationship with Luke Cage, and certainly not Jessica herself. But even as she tries to buy into the idea that better days are ahead, Jessica Jones has seen all too clearly that behind every promise of perfection trails a dark, dangerous shadow.

Breaking the Dark, the first book in the brand-new Marvel Crime series, introduces fans to a grittier, street-level side of the Marvel Universe, and will continue with original novels featuring fan-favorite characters like Luke Cage, written by S.A. Cosby, and Daredevil, written by Alex Segura.

First in a new Marvel superheroes series
Breaking the Dark by Lisa Jewell is the first of a new series of Marvel superhero novels."Jessica is asked by a mother to look into the changes in her twins after returning from England where they were spending time with their father."Jessica Jones is a mess - physically, emotionally, relationally. She has no idea how to move on from what happened to her. Jewell lets us know eventually how devastating it was. Under no circumstance does Jessica want to use her powers. (I had to look them up) I mean, if I could fly I would do that all the time. Jewell has a great description of what's going on with Jessica when she is considering using her powers and when she actually does. This is a Marvel story so there's some magic/woo-woo in the plot. It's not a YA story like some previous superhero novelizations. Jewell does a great job getting us inside of Jessica's head, especially with what's going on with her.Great beginning to the Marvel series from LJ.

Breaking the Dark was good! When I first read an article about this coming out last year I was excited and when it was finally released and I read it, it was well worth the wait. Jewell does a great job exploring the Jessica Jones mythos and blending it with the crime fiction genre. The story was modern and interesting, I like how she essentially made modern technology and this sort of disconnect with the real world and expectations of beauty and self-esteem the villain of the tale. Yeah, it was clever storytelling, I'm going to leave it here because I feel I may give away too much of the story, so I say if you are a Marvel fan read it. If you are not a Marvel fan but a fan of a good crime mystery, read it either way it's a win-win.

I think this is such an interesting project, in the best way possible. I am thrilled that Marvel is branching out into crime novels, because so many of their stories are so suited for it. And I think having Jessica Jones be the first character to get this treatment works well, with her being a modern PI. This novel in particular was a slower burn at the beginning, but by the end was racing towards a thrilling finish. I think that it became harder and harder for me to put down the more I read, and that is exactly what I want out of a crime novel.

The greatest achievement of Jewell's writing, besides the compelling story, is the in-depth characterization of Jessica Jones. She has been a favorite of mine for a while, and seeing her brought to life with such enthusiasm was incredible. It is always nice to see internal worlds of characters like this and I think the way that Jewell wrote Jessica Jones added to the complexities of the character while still remaining true to what I already knew about her.

Where I think this novel falls a bit is the crime itself, because while it is an interesting take on beauty standards, I think that the characters involved could have been given more time to shine. They each felt a bit confined to their own boxes and without as much complexity as I prefer, and the crime committed, while horrifying in its own way, feels a bit too far out of left field. I think leaning into some of the inklings of horror more could have done a great service to the story.

That being said, I think that the use of multiple timelines and small hints throughout the novel worked well enough to make it a fun and easy read. I still had a fantastic time with it and am looking forward to more books like this in the future

My Thoughts:

As we dive into this new series, Breaking the Dark leads us along treacherous pathways to discover the secrets and truths behind the characters who are part of a weird energy that is very dangerous.

I enjoyed Jessica, who alternates a narrative with one of the dark characters, but I couldn’t wait to move beyond those characters.

Have you ever read a book with alternating narrators and couldn’t stand one of them? That was the case in this story.

I kept reading, because I wanted to find out what happened, but this book only earned 3.5 stars for me.

But a very good book.

A female superhero, Jessica, who is going through depression and self doubt is now a private investigator. She is hired by the mother of twins who have returned from the summer with their father changed. Their skin is flawless, they respond to every thing is “Perfect”. The investigation takes Jessica, in many directions.
