A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The author of Nowhere for Very Long continues her story with this deeply honest, moving account of a woman walking the line between independence and isolation when she moves to the Southwest desert with nothing and no one but her four dogs.

In her debut memoir, Nowhere for Very Long, Brianna Madia reflected on her life as a nomad, free to roam some of the most beautiful land in America. Now, in Never Leave the Dogs Behind, the van life adherent faces the unfathomable darkness that comes from a life blown apart, her only solace the support of her dogs.

In the wake of a painful, public divorce and the ensuing fallout, Brianna moves from a pared-down van into a pared-down trailer. She reckons with her decision to be alone in the desert, living on a nine-acre plot of undeveloped land on the dusty outskirts of a small town in Utah, accompanied only by her four precious dogs: Bucket, Dagwood, Birdie, and Banjo. As she grapples with the anger, despair, and delicious freedom that comes from being wholly on her own, Brianna wonders where, exactly, the road less traveled has led her.

A powerful and poignant portrait of rebuilding and surviving, Never Leave the Dogs Behind is about finding the courage to start over when the dream life you thought you were living collapses around your feet.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Very few memoirs go as deep and honest as Madia’s Never Leave the Dog’s Behind, a brave and inspiring account of a young woman’s life being fired in a desert kiln. Amid the unrefined edges of canyon rock and unflinching sun, Madia somehow manages to mend a shattered heart via the remarkable bond she shares with her four-legged companions. I haven’t enjoyed a memoir this much since Wild." — Carol Dunbar, award-winning author of The Net Beneath Us

"A searing metamorphosis. A book for those who know that to stay at the surface is to drown. It takes a brave soul to articulate, not the build-up of the heroine’s glorious fire, nor her rise from the ashes, but the actual sparring with flames, the soot-covered rumble in the cinders of herself. Bri is that soul, and her writing is a salve for those who are burning to be free." — Steph Jagger, author of Unbound and Everything Left to Remember

"An intimate memoir of shattering pain." — Kirkus Reviews

A Book You Can’t Put Down
Briana Madia’s first book was raw and beautiful, but this one is ripped right open. The way she writes is captivating and real. I laughed, and cried, and related to her on so many different levels, especially in this book. Highly recommend reading her first one too. She knows how to capture the magic of the desert and the love and loyalty that she and her dogs share.

I absolutely got this book because I follow the person on Instagram and I am so impressed by her love for her dogs and just her BoHo chic style. This book was enlightening and such a great read I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend this book and even more recommended if you’re a true dog lover, but the book is so much more than just that you can’t go wrong by reading it.

This is a beautiful story of a woman learning to survive then thrive after a major life changing event. Worth the read and a struggle we can all relate to and learn from.

I am someone who doesn’t read often but I couldn't put this book down! I laughed, cried, and smiled throughout. This girl can write!

From someone who has experienced loss and trauma in their life I felt like Brianna was telling my story at times. She writes so beautifully and has honestly given me the courage to write out my own story.

Brianna’s story is truly one to read. Such a bad ass babe living in the desert, sharing an inspiring story of overcoming some insane and terrible challenges she had to face. I flagged many pages for quotes that hit me hard and struck me to my core of the kind of life I want to live and the person I want to be. It’s wild to me how much you can care about a stranger on the internet and her adorable dogs, but her story is captivating and inspiring. I stayed up late a few nights unable to put the book down. Sorry to my other books that sit unopened on my nightstand but this one surly didn’t.

I don’t normally follow influencers, however I have been following Brianna Madia on social media for years. She is open and honest, vulnerable and I inspiring, and I have really enjoyed getting to know her through her posts and more recently through her books. I am inspired by her willingness to share all parts of her life-both the beautiful and the painful parts, and her free spirit that, despite the attempts of on line bullies and trolls, that continues to shine bright. Her writing makes me want to take chances and be true to who I am really meant to be. A beautiful story of one woman’s journey that will leave you both laughing and crying, and a bit more willing to take a chance.

Book came with two holes on the cover that pass through to some of the pages and delivery instructions were not followed, it was left by the door outside our building instead of our flat.

This book touched me so deeply - even more than the first one probably and I didn’t think that this was possible. Following Brianna’s story pn IG for… a decade? And reading this peace of art is like talking to a friend. Thanks, Bri 🧡 we’re so happy you’re here!
