Basically an expansion to Assassin Creed Valhalla. Wouldn’t not say it’s a “return to form” like the marketing behind it says. It has the similar gameplay as Valhalla but you do less damage and have less health forcing you to be more stealthy--Story/Plot:Prequel to Valhalla. You play as Basim who gets by in life from doing contracts (mostly involving thievery). He tries to join the Hidden Ones, gets rejected, and decides to steal from them. He touches an artifact and starts getting visions. He then investigates the artifact and joins The Order.Story has a lot of fetch quest dialogue. I personally don’t really feel immersed in the world. The game is short for an assassin’s creed game at around 20 hours for the main campaign.--Gameplay:On normal and lower difficulties stealth is simple. For the most part you can just camp out in in hay or crotch behind a wall and whistle for an enemy to walk into your one hit assassination strike. For areas where there are dozen’s of enemies huddled together you can bribe them with tokens or hire people with token for distractions. Tokens are basically coins from the John Wick film franchiseParkour is very streamlined and flows well. No complex inputs. I got stuck a couple of times in cramped areas, but majority of the city have wide enough spaces that it’s not a reoccurring issueYou can crotch sprintCombat is fairly simple: strong/charge attack (leave you open if you miss), weak attack, dodge (when enemy glows red for their strong attack), and parry (when enemy glow yellow for their weak attack). What’s irritating is managing stamina especially if there are dozens of enemies huddled around you. You won’t have enough sustained stamina to counter everything forcing you to start over or run away and focus on stealth. Also doesn’t help that your damage output is very low compared to the health of standard enemiesBy doing stealth kills you gain Assassin’s focus (essentially assassin bullet time) where you can tag enemies, slow down time and auto teleport assassinate multiple enemiesEnemy archers can shoot down your pet eagle limiting your scouting options in some areas/encountersGear. You get schematics hidden in chest and around the world. Each gear require specific resources to craft, have different perks, and 3 levels to upgrade to. Able to transmog weaponsFree re-spec on skill treesThere is DLC and the option to access the store via menus is always right in your face. It’s in multiple menus in the game encouraging you to buy content with real world money. There is a pay-to-win factor involved as some paid weapons makes you do high damage similar to Valhalla

After a tenure of massive open world RPG styled games, AC returns to the more linear and focused and story driven plot that the previous entries had.

The Launch edition comes with some extra goodies (at the date of purchase) at a discounted price.

PS5 upgrade is available for free when you purchase the PS4 version of the game.

I'm very glad I waited until the price dropped on this latest AC game. The story was mildly interesting and extremely predictable.

What don't I like:

There a group of people at the heart of the game that resemble the cult in AC Odyssey and that's just lazy to reuse that concept.

I'm tired of relearning what dodges, what interacts, and what attacks and blocks. Is it that much to ask to get a consistent button pattern. All the AC games change this every time.

It was very predictable that you are going to fight a certain character at some point. I won't spoil the game for those who didn't get there yet.

Ending was terrible. Made very little sense.

The shard treasures were less powerful than the default weapons. Why?

The bird (Odyssey rip off again) is horrible and really quite worthless.

It didn't take very long to finish.

What I did like was the history of Bagdad.

I've been a big fan of the AC series. I was much looking forward to Mirage. I expected there to be somewhat of a learning curve but considering I'd played all the rest in the series I didn't expect the challenge to be as frustrating as it has turned out to be. There is much more of an emphasis on stealth than others in the series. There is still the fun factor of fighting or trying to flee.
However, the decided lack of clarity on what or how to accomplish assigned tasks has proven overly difficult.
I'm all in favor of challenges but these seemingly low level contracts and game-line goals are woefully underexplained and I found myself trying, failing and attempting to repeat for no other reason than arrempting to learn what to (and NOT to) do in order to move on.
All that coupled with the less than interesting back drop (scenery) and boring NPC's make AC Mirage just that....a mirage.
Before Mirage arrived I replayed Odyssey (the AC set in ancient Greece). That game was visually stunning, wonderful characters and exceptionally entertaining.
Ah well, live and learn.
