I am a major fan of vampires so this series was right up my street from the first solicitation. The opening scene gave me some major Indiana Jones vibes with the Nazis digging up a sarcophagus. The set up for the rest of the series is a group of POWs that have been troublesome to other camps so they are all being taken away to rot in an inescapable castle camp. This is where the undercurrent of distrust begins, which is a major thread of the series, the judgement of people being different for the colour of their skin or where they are from. This runs throughout the series with the interaction between the prisoners and the Nazi guards and there commander.
The story is split into two parts, one focusing on the prisoners and their escape plans and the other the attempts to communicate with the other prisoner, the vampire. Both of the different focuses are compelling but the scenes with Nocona and the vampire are slightly more interesting. With the prisoners, there are some great characters to draw you in from the Welsh priest Cook to Lt Col Hancock all play an integral part of the main story but none have as much impact as a supporting characters flight lieutenant Ian McCallum.
The other half of the story is what drew me in the most. From the start of the communication with the vampire there is a very real sense of tension. You can feel Nocona’s fear as he is made to convince this ancient monster to aid the people that are even more evil than the vampire itself. There is some really intense back and forth between the two prisoners about the common ground they find themselves in.
The pace of both parts of the story is really good and the story evolves well as it progresses. The way the series ends seems to come along really abruptly, you are happily reading along and then it is suddenly over. This is not a criticism in any way, it's more that I wanted more from the story, although the end was very satisfying it still felt like there was more to be seen from it.
There was a sense when I first read this story that it wasn't quite as good as I hoped it was going to be but I think at the time I had hyped it up in my head so much it was never going to live up to what I thought it was going to be. But coming back to it a year later and reading it all in one sitting as a trade, it was a lot better than I first thought. I would say this series was really well written and illustrated and would give it a score of 7 out of 10. The vampire side of the story I really enjoyed immensely and would like to see more of the history of that creature.
