“Sorrentino exhibits a mastery of illustrative technique, conveying creeping dread through oddly angular or looping layouts of overlapping panels, depicting unexpected details in the first half of this volume and later expressing cosmic terror with starkly realistic double-page depictions of inexplicable landscapes.” -Library Journal

“Sorrentino's hyperrealistic, heavily photo-referenced art creates an eerie sense of heightened reality in which the crashing waves, looming lighthouse, and craggy faces of locals are as menacing as John's blood-drenched hallucinations. The page layouts disorient effectively, with panels forming concentric circles, or toppling vertiginously down the page, with the icy landscape perpetually hovering at the close of a fog-shrouded day.” -Publishers Weekly

I've read this graphic novel twice, both times marveled at the art. Take away the words and I think it tells the same story. Both creators are both accomplished illustrators so it makes sense the art pushes the story and not the prose. This is a ongoing series and can't wait for more.

Jeff Lemire is known for being. Very prolific writer and the speed in which he spins out yarns shows in this tale. Great set-up, and then it’s over in a confusing get it over with pace. What happened? I’m assuming that this book is just one tale or chapter in a larger story ‘Bone Mythos’, or maybe not, I don’t know. 3.5 stars as what it does good, it does great. And Sorentino is as good an artist in comics today.

The art style is good. That's about all I can say positive. The characters are basically nonentities, the potential mystery of a hole that seems infinitely deep is wasted, the plo goes nowhere, the story asks a lot of questions, but gives no answers or even hints of answers. Someone just slapped a bunch of creepy images and odeas together and hoped it would turn into a book

Sorrentino is on-point here, as usual, but unfortunately that's about the only thing this book has going for it. I think Lemire is just stretched too thin with too many projects these days, because this doesn't seem like a fully realized story. One-dimensional characters, little mystery or intrigue, and nothing that felt new or exciting. Beyond that, this was roughly the size of one $5 comic at a premium HC trade price. If you're expecting anything on par with Gideon Falls or Black Hammer, brace yourself for disappointment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Awful story, beautiful art
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 11, 2022
There are 2 Jeff Lemire's, the one who wrote Sweet-tooth, Black hammer and Essex County, all wonderful and with something to say, and the one who takes an 8 page story, stretches it into a very gruel-like state smears it thinly across the pages and leaves me feeling either 'so what' or 'why did you just waste my life?'.

The wonderful Andre Sorrentino is woefully wasted on this pointlessness. Gideon Falls had enough meat to hang his evocative art from, this does not.

This is middle class 'I like comics but not superheroes' blandness. A coffee table book to show you are hip or clever. It isn't, there are way better choices out there.

I also received Mazebook by the same author in the last week, despite some clever storytelling pages, more of the same thinly spread gruel.

Fool me once etc.

Stop wasting Andre on this dullness, tell an interesting story and give characters actual personalities or motivations so I give a damn.

1/2 a star for writing, 4 stars for art. Overall, avoid and buy a good book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice Product, No Story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 11, 2022
This is a very nice book as a product. Quality hard back cover and paper. The art is excellent.
But..... its supposed to be a comic book not a art book. If there's a story in there I can't find it.
Sorry but not worth the price for me......
