Bad Mother Vol. 1 Kindle & comiXology

A nerve-racking thriller from crime writer Christa Faust and blockbuster artist Mike Deodato Jr. (The Resistance, Infinity Wars). When her teenaged daughter goes missing under mysterious circumstances, suburban soccer mom April Walters embarks on a harrowing mission to find her; a journey that takes her through the underbelly of her suburban community and sets her on a collision course with a massive crime syndicate and its lethal matriarch. Tested to her limits and beyond, April discovers that hell hath no fury like a mother scorned.

Review

"An engaging take on a crime story, AWA's Bad Mother miniseries is a bold combination of the Punisher and a soccer mom." -Screen Rant

"Bad Mother couldn't have arrived at a better time, with the resurgence of older women who would be considered past their prime cast in the genre roles we often see both real and fictional men in."
-SyFy Wire

"Bad Mother #1 is a solid crime thriller set-up, and the pleasure of a crime story is waiting for the chips to fall and to see how far April will go to get her daughter back."
-Bleeding Cool

LIBRARY JOURNAL (STARRED) -- The title may be misleading, since April is one great mother when she struggles to find her kidnapped daughter in Faust's (Peepland) latest. She is, however, very bad for the criminals in her town. A middle-aged mother with a husband out of the country for work, April does her best to keep a happy home. When her daughter Taylor returns from a date with bruises, April rushes out to confront the attacker. When she only finds dead bodies, she returns home to an empty house and no daughter. Ava, the local criminal boss who is running both a meth and sex trade operation, is now holding Taylor captive because her boyfriend, the recently deceased body April found, was stealing from Ava. April, working diligently to find Taylor, begins to dismantle Ava's empire. The final confrontation between April and Ava is fun to behold. The characters are believable, especially April as the protective mother, and Ava is a diabolical schemer without mercy. The illustrations are realistic and beautifully drawn by Deodato, Jr.VERDICT A short five-issue story that is a must-read for mature readers. Fans of the common woman defying odds to save a loved one will enjoy.

Christa Faust is the author of eleven novels, including the Edgar and Anthony award nominated MONEY SHOT, CHOKE HOLD, and HOODTOWN, as well as the Scribe award winning novelization of SNAKES ON A PLANE and hardboiled lesbian P.I. series BUTCH FATALE: DYKE DICK.

She grew up in New York City, in the Bronx and Hell’s Kitchen. She’s been making stuff up her whole life, and spent most of her teen years on endless subway rides, cutting school and scribbling stories.

After High School finally had enough of her, she worked in the Times Square peep booths and later as a fetish model and professional Dominatrix.

She sold her first short story when she moved to Los Angeles in the early 90s. After nearly 20 years in her beloved adopted city, she still considers herself an expat rather than a native.

She’s an avid reader and collector of vintage paperbacks, a Film Noir enthusiast and a Tattooed Lady. She writes primarily Hardboiled crime fiction, but also does work-for-hire media tie in novels.

She lives in Porn Valley with too many shoes and her Boston Terrier Butch.

Very well written. I read it in one sitting because it was so intriguing. I highly recommend this book. I hope she writes more.

First off, this is not the type of story I would buy. But I tried it with my comixology subscription and I'm glad I did. Its not a silly super mom type story like I thought. Sadly I don't think courageous people like this really exist, at least not going to the extremes this mother did. But it still had one foot in the realm of possibilities so I will recommend it as worthy of your time.

Great book! April is a normal mom with teenagers, and when her kids are threatened she goes beyond the extra mile. Definitely worth the read!

This story had me engaged from the start. I read it in one sitting because I had to know what was going to happen next. A gritty crime drama that doesn't disappoint. Highly recommended.

Great story. Would make decent “ordinary person pushed too far” action movie. With that said you sort of know where the story is headed. Thumbs up.

Author Christa Faust is no stranger to crime thrillers, having written Money Shot and Choke Hold for the publisher, Hard Case Crime (where Stephen King publishes his crime/thriller stories). Faust has a talent for moving scenes along, giving you just enough information without hammering you over the head. Her characters feel real and the dialogue spot-on. Perfectly suited for this story was master artist, Mike Deodato Jr., who draws some of the best body language in the medium. You know exactly what characters are thinking and feeling from their posture and expressions. A very impressive feat and Deodato succeeded beautifully. For a one-shot thriller, this was about as good as you can get in such a compact story. Huge recommendation.

When a dumpy housewife’s teenage daughter goes missing, this mother will do whatever it takes to get her back. Even take on drug dealers. It a cool story but could have been executed better.

Great visuals. And what could go wrong with a story from Christa Faust. A truly inventive trio of geniuses behind this effort! I leave it on my coffee table so that guests, if I had them, would know I still rock at 73.

I have heard good things about both the author and the artist. A cursory look through so far, but I reckon it will live up to the hype.

4.0 out of 5 stars A really great book

This was excellent. Very well thought out, with plausible characters and situations. Probably says more about me than anything that I hated the antagonist more for her post gym turmeric and kale juice, than for her criminal ways. Just have a bloody protein shake love!
