Our story

How we got our start
Matador was born in 2014 with the creation of the Pocket Blanket when we stumbled on a trend of people sitting outside on their coats or lugging bulky blankets to the parks and beaches. What started as one innovative product became a passion for designing and developing high-quality equipment.
What makes our product unique
Our strengths in design, material technology, and construction give us an edge in developing innovative products that bring outdoor expertise to the pursuit of travel. We design our products to perform expertly in all conditions first and foremost, and we leave the bells and whistles behind.
Why we love what we do
Everything we make is founded on our obsession with travel and the outdoors. We design and test all of our equipment at our Boulder, CO headquarters to ensure we’re getting the high-caliber performance we need when we set out on our own objectives.

We used the 32L backpack for Chicago to Rome Italy trip in February. Stored in the compact bag for flight and used for most days exploring the city. The 32L is perfect for 2 people, raincoats, hats, gloves, water bottles, First aid, lotions etc. The bag is waterproof, so no need to buy a cover, it rolls top down small enough to enter museums and large enough to put your hat and shirt purchases from the day in it. The straps are lightweight but strong. they do not slip or snag. Easy access pocket for maps and notes. the bag weights nothing when empty. Exactly what you want. I cannot imagine and I am glad we did NOT get the 28L. That would have been too small.

Very happy with my Freerain32 pack, as I spent FOREVER researching which lightweight pack to purchase as my main travel backpack. I was between the Gossamer Gear Murmur, the Zpacks Nero, and the Matador Freerain32. The main reason I chose the latter was because the other packs were designed for backpacking, whereas this is a more suitable pack for travel.

For carrying 32 liters, this pack is as light as they come (10.5 oz?!) and is practically waterproof. I love the outside zippered pocket for more easy-to-access items and the side pockets hold water bottles, etc. comfortably. The pack itself is perfect for carrying 10-15 pounds but any more and it might get a little uncomfortable. The shoulder straps are very thin, and would likely dig into your shoulders with too much weight.

This pack is perfect for minimalist travelers, shorter ultralight backpacking trips (1-3 nights), or as a packable daypack inside your main travel bag.

Matador put their heart and soul into designing this bag, and I'm so glad they did! The Freerain32 will be my go-to bag for as long as it holds up.

The outside pocket zipper broke on 2nd trip. Lost a cell phone. Don’t buy.
Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2022
The zippers are incredibly easy to break; three have already come off-track for me and I've only used this three times. Also got holes easily (I would not think putting a laptop in the back pocket would do that, but here we are with several tears).

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best waterproof super lightweight backpacking bags I have owned
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 7, 2021
This is amazing. The quality solid. It does what it says. Beautiful pitch back and watertight, packable and superlight. I take it kayaking and fit everything in. It really is amazing. There are so many rip offs out there and cheap Chinese crap flooding the market that I had to write this positive review as I don't take the time to do this normally. I know this is quite a pricey bag, but I would by one again. I have had this now for 3 months. I have also taken it for wildswimming in a forest where we walked for an hour and I even had my super bulky medium sized long sleeved Dry Robe in it, towels, clothes, toe float, shoes, thermos, cups and snacks and a kindle. More could fit in. It will come on every holiday now. Love it! Thank you for quality for once!!

Für mich der beste Reiserucksack den man kaufen kann. Er ist klein, leicht, robust und es passt jede Menge in den Rucksack. Er ist teuer, aber ich würde Ihn jederzeit wieder kaufen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Una maravilla
Reviewed in Spain on April 24, 2021

+ Absolut top verarbeitet
