The Woods Vol. 1 Kindle & comiXology

WHY WE LOVE IT: As fans of James Tynion IV's work in the Batman universe (BATMAN ETERNAL, RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS), we were eager to publish his first original comic series. THE WOODS gives us that same eerie, small-town horror feel we get whenever we read a Stephen King novel.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: James Tynion IV is a former protege of BATMAN writer Scott Snyder, so you know he's learned a lot about how to craft a compelling tale. If you're fan of teen conspiracy comics like Morning Glories, Sheltered, and Revival, you'll immediately be sucked into THE WOODS.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: On October 16, 2013, 437 students, 52 teachers, and 24 additional staff from Bay Point Preparatory High School in suburban Milwaukee, WI vanished without a trace. Countless light years away, far outside the bounds of the charted universe, 513 people find themselves in the middle of an ancient, primordial wilderness. Where are they? Why are they there? The answers will prove stranger than anyone could possibly imagine. Collects issues #1-4 of the critically acclaimed series.

About the Author

James Tynion IV got his start in the pages of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s acclaimed run on Batman at DC Comics in early 2012, where he co-wrote the backup stories for the best-selling Court of Owls and Death of the Family storylines. He has since written stories for Detective Comics, as well as writing the ongoing series Talon, and Red Hood and the Outlaws. He lives and writes in New York City, and is consistently amazed that people are actually letting him work on comic books professionally. He alternates between taking in the most grisly horror media he can get his hands on, and trying not to get choked up while listening to musical theater soundtracks. You can find him on Twitter @JamesTheFourth, or on his Tumblr.

I love this series. I've read 8 or so volumes of it, and the story is good, but the real star is the art and the colors. It's so beautiful. Has a lot of visual/other similarities to Paper Girls, but with a more realistic style rather than Matt Wilson's (also amazing, maybe more amazing) flatter color style.

I read 8 volumes on Comixology and then bought just Volume 1 in a physical copy just for the art. I like to just pull it out and flip through it for inspiration.

So far, it's a pretty decent sorry. I would prefer more character development, but maybe that just adds to the confusion of what is going on in the story. I think a reread is in order before volume 2. Can't wait to see what happens.

I picked this up and couldn't put it down and now I want the next one! The characters look a bit off-putting in some frames, but mostly the art is pretty good. The characters are likeable and the interpersonal drama is totally believable, and like I said, the plot is compelling.

I've read The Drifting Classroom, which is almost an identical plot basis as this series, but I'm not going to judge this as a knock off of it. There's different ways to tell a story, and this plot is one that's caught my interest before, so why not give it a shot again? I feel it has potential to be just as good, or honestly better than, The Drifting Classroom, which it's already surpassed in art quality.

Sure, there are character cliches, but it's characters are high school based, and those stereotypes are in literally every high school in existence. Give it some time for character development. In just the first four chapters, there isn't much character growth, I'll admit, which is a bit disappointing, but there is enough addition to the plot for the mystery of what's happening to grow, and that's enough to get me to wait for volume two.

Woods, Vol. 1 by James Tynion IV begins with an ordinary school day; it introduces the students, the teachers, and the school. Then the school is transported, students and all, to an alien moon. There are creatures, some of which are violent, and signs of intelligent and hyper-intelligent life. Within the school, there is a power struggle between the coach – a former special forces operative – the principal, and the student government.

This is an excellent title. The characters and the situation are well defined. There are leaders, there are followers, and there are rebels. The alien lifeforms are scary, and this is a frightening comic; I really got into it even though I started reading it before six in the morning (insomnia). It does remind me heavily of The Walking Dead with a mix of Predators, but there's enough new about this collection to make it a worthwhile read. ****1/2

Good intro to story of the entire population of a prep school is suddenly transported to another planet. The struggle for control begins immediately. Who will lead? Where are they? What is trying to kill them? Can't wait to read next volume.
