Not as intense as I had hoped, but I'm intriqued!
In a small town in Wisconsin beloved friends and family members are coming back to life. But this isn’t your typical zombie story… they come back not as disgusting creatures, but as themselves. They still look human, have their memories, and can function. You’d never know they died. Its hard for people to accept the Revivals and things are being questioned. The CDC steps in to try and crack the mystery and while this is all happening there's another twist that keeps you addicted. The story is nicely paced, the characters are evolving, and I’m unsure about it and yet hooked at the same time. I feel like there was a lot unfolding here and looking forward to volume 2 with hopes of some answers and to see where this is going.

What's this, you ask? Oh, it's nothing special, just a little old comic book called Revival, AND IT ROCKS.

This year, creator-owned Image Comics titles like Saga and Fatale have proven that there's plenty of high-quality reading to be done outside the superhero genre. Enter Revival Volume 1, the genesis of what's sure to be a stellar series. I won't give you a summary, as the description tells you all you need to know going in. Just know that when it says "the dead came back to life", these aren't the zombies of The Walking Dead fame. These are friends and loved ones, back from the dead, just as they were. Almost. And it makes for one heck of a story.

I can't say I've ever read a "rural noir" before, but Tim Seeley writes a fantastic one. With this first volume, Seeley introduces a multi-layered story woven with elements of mystery, horror, and drama. It's wonderful to read this book and follow the different threads the author has set up. The dialogue is entertaining and telling of the characters, and Seeley does a bang-up job not just in presenting solid, vibrant, distinctive characters, but in giving them heart. It's terrific writing.

Speaking of the characters, where would this book be without the brilliant art of Mike Norton? One of the things I love about Norton is that he's wonderful at distinguishing his characters; no one person looks like another, even those who are related. "Classy" is the word I'd use for Norton's art. It's classy, it's clean, and it's got character. Also, the layouts are simple and stark, but never monotonously so.

Just so you know before you buy it, this book is rated mature, as it contains explicit language and a fair bit of violence. But good Lord, if it isn't a great story, and I can't wait to see where it goes from here. If you like comics, and Revival sounds like your cup of tea, read this book, and you'll be just as eager for more of the series as I am.

Zombie type stories have been done so many times with not much variation. Usually its a matter of whether they lurch along at a slow pace or run. The difference here is that they seem to return as the person they were, although with a couple of interesting differences. One is that they can heal fast from new injuries and the other that they carry back an evil spirit, or just have the potential to host one. My reason for four stars versus five is that at the end of this first volume I'm not intrigued to the point where I feel I must see what happens next like I have been with other titles. The story takes place in unfamiliar territory for me being that it is in Wisconsin so I'm unfamiliar with day to day winter life in such a place. And that also makes it harder to relate to the characters and some of the dialog. But I'm still on the fence about going into purchase mode for the remaining volumes as I do see how the story could get more interesting as big government takes a more active role and causes obstacles for the protagonist. It remains a definite maybe for me to continue forward.

One day, in a small town in Wisconsin, the dead came back to life. Officer Dana Cypress is the one assigned to investigate. When word of the "Revivers" gets out, the media descend on the small town of Wausau. Along with religious nuts, other crazies, and something...else.

The "Revivers" aren't like your typical zombies. They come back with varying degrees of normalcy. Some a crazy and deranged. Some are so normal you wouldn't even believe anything was wrong.

During the course of her investigation, officer Cypress discovers that her sister, Martha, is a Reviver. Exactly how she died and who killed her are part of the overall mystery of the book. From Dana's relationship with her dad, who also happens to be her boss, to the mystery of Martha's death, and the mystery of what exactly happened in Wausau Seeley has plenty of plot threads for you to follow. Not to mention the ghost-like apparition that is wandering the woods around town.

The story is part horror, part mystery, and part drama. It's deftly weaved together by Seeley and capably illustrated by Mike Norton. If you are a fan of good comics, or good stories in general, then Revival is the book for you!

I immediately picked up this graphic novel after reading all of the published Walking Dead series. I was craving another zombie graphic novel, and I needed my fix. Fortunately for me, I found this gem after reviewing other graphic novels on Amazon. What makes revival worth reading is its strong characters, unique take on a typical zombie themed story, and its artwork. Often times as I read, I thought that it was stronger than some of the Walking Dead series.

The novel begins with a strong initiating event where the dead mysterious revive in a small town in Wisconsin. Except, these are not your typical, brain craving zombies, instead the dead could be mistaken for the living except for their evil, distorted, or twisted quirks. These undead prove to be strong antagonists; however, there is a ghost-like entity that haunts the pages, yet this evil force is sometimes confusing, and still has me wondering about its significance.

Overall, I would recommend this book to those who are Walking Dead graphic novel fans, those who enjoy a good police-mystery, or those who enjoy gore, lore, and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars At least Equal to Walking dead

Let us see, how the story developes... but so far, it is a very good read. Really like it. And in my humble opinion, the storyline and characters keeps you even more on track than the Walking dead does. Although I think i like the b/w Drawings in the Walking dead better than the coloured pages in revival ...

3.0 out of 5 stars Horror comics with a noir touch
Reviewed in France on March 27, 2014
A good start and a complex blend of genres
Makes you think about other zombie stories but this one gets us a peculiar tone: how would people act if the dead from one day would continue to live?
It's too bad that the comics didn't stay on this single question though- I found that the supernatural layer on top was weakening the story drama and the overall plot itself

Me llegó tres días después de comprarlo. No lo encontré en español y al final ya me valía en inglés. Una historia de zombis "un tanto diferente". Esta es la primera parte y ya hay dos volúmenes más. Totalmente recomendada.

This is not "the new WALKING DEAD", thank god. Dont get me wrong, i LOVE the walking dead, and most other things that are zombie related, but this isnt about zombies. Revival is about the dead coming back to life, but they are far from zombies. To tell you anymore would ruin a great read. I took a punt on this, and now i have found a new book that will fill the void that the end of THE BOYS has left in my life. great story, great art, great recommendation from AMAZON.
