Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Fresh off the opening salvo of his multiuniverse, alternate-history, mad-science-bomb Manhattan Projects (2012), Hickman starts another high-concept series, this one set in a futuristic Old West and starring none other than the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. But there’s trouble in the ranks, it seems, between Death and his cohort. What exactly that trouble is, and a swarming host of other tantalizing questions—like what happened between the Civil War and 2066, for instance—are teased out as Death tracks down those who have wronged him, in the grand tradition of western revenge yarns. The sprawling storytelling will likely pay off in the long run, but the narrative moves in so many directions right off the bat that one’s attention gets easily quartered. Happily, Dragotta’s bloody, gangly art is a great fit—from the eerie white figure of Death and the impish manifestations of Conquest, War, and Famine to the dustpunk marriage of frontier imagery and futuristic technology. Though it’s still in its early throes, this looks to be a seriously entertaining, darkly epic apocalypse in the making. --Ian Chipman

Outstanding, outlandish and engrossing
I haven't bought a comic book since I was a kid. This is a mature, dark, fantastical book that I'm having trouble putting down. I'm re-reading the first volume (having already read it this morning) while waiting for the rest of the volumes I just purchased to arrive. This is an alternate universe of America exhibiting a fantastic mix of familiar names (Mao) and imagery (the confederate flag) with a vision of some terrible version of the world. Religion, technology, war, love are all at play here.I'm not sure that you'll love this book - I just know that I do, very much."We would tell you to pray, but it wouldn't do any good. You have earned what is coming to you."

4.75 Stars

East of West is an apocalyptic western that follows the Horseman Death as he goes on a journey for vengeance. It's never made quite clear what happened to him, but you get the idea, and while you're never quite sure why the Chosen act the way they do, you start to figure it out by the end. I actually went back and reread some sections, and that helped a lot in understanding the whole plot.

I really liked this book. It was almost 5 stars, actually. But for some reason I couldn't bring myself to do that. I hate giving anything smaller than a half star because I think it starts to get messy then, but this was worth more than 4.5 so I really had no choice. I think my biggest issue probably does lie in the confusing nature of the narrative. Hopefully, volume two will clear up some of these things.

The art was gorgeous! I wasn't a fan from the first page, but once I started really reading it I couldn't help but love it. It's different from other things I've read, but different in a good way, and very good with the story. Needless to say, if I see Dragotta's name somewhere else, I'll probably pick it up.

The characters were very interesting. It took me an issue or so before I really started to enjoy them, but when I did get into them, I really loved them. I think Death probably is my favorite, even though he's a bit cold at the beginning. Wolf and Crow were cool as well and I want to spend more time getting to know them.

World building was awesome. I loved the different aspects of the world and I loved how they each had a distinct personality. My only complaint here- I want a map! I love maps and I think it would enhance the storytelling if there was one for this series.

To begin with, I would be remiss if I did not say right away; This is a beautiful comic book! The artist is amazing and the character designs are unique and imaginative. This may not mean as much due to the fact that we are talking about a comic book, but this is a different kind of comic book all together. The story is one of a kind, and the writer blends his tale so well with the artist that we get to see one of the rare cases in which they both surpass everything that has been done and bring the reader a very special treat. I saw the cover and a few pages inside the book and figured this is just another western, but it is much much more than that. This book is part western, part apocalyptic thriller, part sci-fi adventure and ALL ADRENALINE. The characters are bad to the bone and the story grabs you by the throat and sucks you in, holding on for dear life as you ride the edge of your seat at 135 miles per hour from beginning to end! There are slimy back-stabbing politicians, holier than thou royal families, demonic religious fanatics, gods, legends come to life, heroic texas rangers that kill with little or no remorse, and the four horsemen of the apocalypse! All drawn in a style that is both beautiful, sinister, and iconic. I am completely hooked on this book and although there are some truly great titles out there like CHEW and Morning Glories, this is the best brand new title, the best that has been released in the last 12 months. Not only does it hold its own with those others but it beats a couple of them into a thin puddle of goo. There will probably be many awards on the horizon for this creative team. I hope the book continues to be this good for many many issues to come and I will pray that it gets a very special hardcover treatment in the near future. GO. Read. This. Book.

Jonathan Hickman's concept here has the distinction of being four or five somewhat cliched concepts combined in a completely novel way: Dust-punk, the a high technology grim meat hook, the four horsemen, and Westerns with a post-communist flair. Flourishes of orientalism and Western cliche aside, the story is at least interesting. It's also a little humorless, and so high concept, it's sometimes a little hard to dig into the story as no character has a sympathetic human vantage point. Ultra-violent, but Nick Dragotta's art and design is very compelling. The character impetus for Death is a cliche, but the character is interesting if a bit static in this first volume. This holds a lot of promise.

I was already a fan of Hickman and would probably read anything he did w/o knowing much about it. However, I wasn't overly familiar with Nick Dragotta's artwork and that combined with the not super-enticing title, had me a little bit on the fence buying this book sight unseen. BIG mistake! This book is great. It looks fantastic - Dragotta's got a clean-line style that's similar to a lot of the best European and Spanish comic artists working today (like Marcos Martin, Javier Pulido, David Lopez, etc) and the artwork and designs are first rate.

The story itself doesn't necessarily break new ground. The near-apocalyptic future has lots of tropes familiar to any casual sci-fi fan, but Hickman does it all just right and it's still a great pleasure to watch him build his world and introduce each character, assisted by Dragotta's effortless-seeming sequential storytelling skills.

I won't get into details that might spoil the enjoyment of reading this book, but the storyline involves the incarnations of the Four Horsemen and a fanatical cult obsessed with bringing about Armageddon and their different relationships with the reigning world superpowers. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has enjoyed Wagner & McEown's Grendel: War Child, Remender's Uncanny X-Force and Miller & Gibbons' Give Me Liberty.

I was critical of J. Hickman's  Pax Romana  for seemingly skipping ahead through a very interesting and original plot, one that could have been developed a lot more over several books (you can see my review for more on that). This time however, he's conjured up yet another futuristic and imaginative "brave" new world, with an amazing plot to match, but he also seems intent on building on it ( East of West Volume 2: We Are All One TP  | East of West Volume 3: There Is No Us TP ). And thank goodness for that! This is what I'm always searching for (and rarely find), a story that keeps me wanting more set in a world that sparks the imagination, something you've never seen before (nothing less!). And boy does it deliver on that!

I simply couldn't put it down. I bought volume 1 and 2 together and I'm fairly certain I went through them faster than any other graphic novels I've ever read. My only criticism is I wish we had more details about this world, how it actually "map's out" and everything. But maybe Hickman doesn't want us to know or he may not know himself. Maybe we don't need to know and it's just so good that it makes us want even more.

Can't wait for volume 3, hope there's a lot more on the way!

I heard about this some time ago when listening to a podcast called "I SELL COMICS!". They gave a rough outline of the plot, dystopian future/four horsemen etc, and i went straight onto Amazon to pre-order the trade paperback. And i waited. Let me tell you now that the wait was worth it. Great story, a bit confusing at first but easy to pick up via flasbacks that fill in any blanks, great art work and great dialogue. Buy this now. And thanks to Mike & Ming, not only for a very amusing podcast, but for a fantastic recomendation.
