It is a very QUICK read... I wish it was 300 pages long. The story is definitely dramatic... not for kids. But a great work. Did I tell you how much I enjoyed the art/coloring? These guys make a great team. Highly recommended for mature readers.

It's a little shallow plot wise but the potential is there for a pretty interesting series. It's just a shame it's a one shot graphic novel. The novel is about this guy who suffers from some minor brain damage from a fall as a kid when he was playing superheroes with his brother. He grows up feeling envious because his girlfriend (his brother's love interest) leaves him, His mom sort of resents him, and his brother is a Harvard college student. While he obviously can barely hold it together and turns to drugs and alcohol to deal with his constant headaches (which is why I mention the brain damage).

He ends up finding the cape he wore during the accident and the cape turns out to give him the ability to fly. He ends up using this cape to extract revenge on those he feel wronged him. The ex-girlfriend who he finds out is now in some sort of relationship with his brother, His mother for coming off as always disappointed in him and rubbing his brother's accomplishments in his face, and his brother, who stole his girlfriend and is everything he wanted to be.

It's really just a tale of some pretty dark violence. It's a satisfying read and pretty interesting but Joe Hill never really goes into any major backstory or details. Which is why I'd love for him to make a sequel or something to sort of explain the history of the cape and things like that. Also, Really enjoyed the ending. It was a nice, little twist that made me want another one. Perhaps from the Brother's POV.

Dark comic but if you have read any Joe Hill than you already knew that. I very interesting story. It is not as well crafted as his work on Locke and Key (which is one of the greatest works ever created in the comic medium) but this is more along the lines of His novel "Horns". I really liked the illustration. Joe hill has a great track record and I like that he crosses from traditional horror fiction to comic books. We need more quality horror in the comic industry. Recommended.

I'm a Joe Hill fan. My wife and I have collected the Locke & Key series on our Kindle, and I figured this would be a nice change from an author that I respected.

What I got was a pretty quick read, which I didn't mind, by an author who based it off of one of Hill's short stories. When you read the cover, you think you're getting a story written by the author. Unfortunately, I have yet to read "The Cape" short story, but I hope it's more enjoyable than this. The story was okay, but in my opinion was pretty predictable. The art was decent -- something I expect from a comic from a company that is not one of the top two (Marvel and DC).

I also took a chance and downloaded some of Hill's novels on the Kindle, which I hope will be better. Would I recommend this to a friend? Not really. I would probably tell them about it and save them some money. If you're looking for a good Joe Hill comic WRITTEN by Joe Hill and not someone basing it off his work, read Locke & Key. They are all pretty affordable, and the story is really engaging.

Until my next review, READ MORE COMICS!!! (Yeah, I know, I totally ripped off Wil Wheaton on that one...)

If you are looking for a series you can finish quickly to just try out Joe Hill's writing style before getting invested in something larger like Locke and Key this is a good sample. Its unusual and perhaps even shocking for some but that's what makes for good horror after all. Definitely don't go in expecting a super hero story or you will likely be disappointed. But for horror its hard to beat Steven King, or in this case his son.

The team, with Joe Hill, tell a remarkable story of trauma, revenge, a superpower, brotherhood, and jealousy.

I loved the concept and execution; though the subject matter is perfect for deeper looks into the characters, motives, and stories.

At times very dark and very evil, yet still a very great read.
I wish it was a full run, instead of a one off.

Joe Hill whips out another masterpiece. The cape takes you to a place I haven't seen superhero stories go yet. It explores the dark side of someone who at the beginning is a sympathetic character who gets powers after having a pretty rough life. He takes his newfound ability to exact revenge upon everyone he feels did him wrong.
A fresh story with some great art.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark and rotten
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 28, 2013
I wondered how many books Joe Hill will have to write before people stop mentioning that he is Stephen King's son. And I have just done it again.

The Cape is a comic based on his short story. As a boy Eric plays with a cape and one day a terrible accident occurs that changes his life. As an adult he is a waster; no job, no money, no hope. But he still has that cape and one night he pulls it over himself and drifts off to sleep...only to find himself having drifted towards the ceiling.

What does a person do when they suddenly have a super-power? Do they become the people's hero - flying around the world correcting wrongs and performing daring rescues? Or do they take revenge on everyone who has hurt them? Let them down? Opposed them?

It is not a new question but it is an interesting side to the superhero question. This is a gripping read and suitably dark with artwork to match. It's as if Superman's cape has been trampled in dirt and left to rot. It's twisted and grimy and drawn boldly. It's a virtual punch to the stomach and I enjoyed it immensely.
