Sudan, South Sudan, and Darfur: What Everyone Needs to Know® Illustrated Edition, Kindle Edition

For thirty years Sudan has been a country in crisis, wracked by near-constant warfare between the north and the south. But on July 9, 2011, South Sudan became an independent nation. As Sudan once again finds itself the focus of international attention, former special envoy to Sudan and director of USAID Andrew Natsios provides a timely introduction to the country at this pivotal moment in its history. Focusing on the events of the last 25 years, Sudan, South Sudan, and Darfur: What Everyone Needs to Know® sheds light on the origins of the conflict between northern and southern Sudan and the complicated politics of this volatile nation. Natsios gives readers a first-hand view of Sudan's past as well as an honest appraisal of its future. In the wake of South Sudan's independence, Natsios explores the tensions that remain on both sides. Issues of citizenship, security, oil management, and wealth-sharing all remain unresolved. Human rights issues, particularly surrounding the ongoing violence in Darfur, likewise still clamor for solutions. Informative and accessible, this book introduces readers to the most central issues facing Sudan as it stands on the brink of historic change.

Very informative! The different Muslim persuasions involved were unknown to me. Other historical influences were also important to understand. The author seems to have been a real insider.

Really good background information that gives those going to work there a great understanding of how Sudan and South Sudan got to where they are today.

Very Informative. Must Read for anybody interested in the Genesis and follow up on the crisis.

The book views the Sudanese conflicts through a "good guys versus bad guys" lens and inappropriately forces the various groups involved in the conflicts into one or the other category. The book overall did not do justice to the complexity of either the conflicts in Sudan or the people living there. The author does not present a deep understanding of the region, its people, or its problems.
It is also very pro-Christianity and the author seems delighted at the spread of Christianity among previously animistic peoples. He presents the missionaries as saviors of the South Sudanese and glosses over how many of the South Sudanese have not converted to Christianity. He presents an unrealistic image of the brave Christian missionaries saving the poor helpless South Sudanese.
Also, note that at the time I purchased this book as a kindle book, it did not have page numbers, so it was difficult to use it for research.

The book is awash with factual errors. I have stopped counting them.

It lacks what should be the backbone of contemporary history writing: analysis of societal structures, such as the "Sudanese Middle Classes", or the current regime.

According to the author, it was written during a lonely island holiday. This shows. Some reading might have shaken the author's untrammelled convictions. The result is a superficial essay between fact and fiction. It is not "what everyone needs to know".

This man Andrew S. Natsios is war monger and works full time to the Jewish lobby "AIPAC" which serves as ISRAELS main propaganda tool to influence and buy U.S lawmakers and congressman.

This is one of the main orchestrators of the War on Iraq to rid it of Nuclear weapons.....The same man who supported Bill clintons bombing of the biggest Pharmaceutical producing company in all of Africa( Yes the one they bombed in Sudan) because he claimed it made chemical weapons(One of the biggest lies before 9/11). He is the same person that poured billions of dollars of Aid and weapons to South sudanese rebels who are literally STARVING THEIR OWN PEOPLE to pursue Pro-Israeli agenda's against their foe's in north sudan.

The whole book is advocating supplying air force and weapons to the south again North Sudan.

What he doesn't mention is that during North-South War, the majority of the casualties were from South-South tribal violence(the same tribal violence that has killed THOUSANDS since SOUTH independence).

He doesn't mention how the North gave the south their own country in quest for PEACE without any guarantees....

He doesn't mention how south sudan attacked north sudan with ISRAELI WEAPONS(north captured 27 Israeli tanks in heglig)

He doesn't mention how the south supports rebels in 3 DIFFERENT REGIONS in North Sudan, with no intention of stopping any time soon.

He doesnt meantion how their is 10,000,000,000(Out of 16 billion they recieved) unaccounted for by the South Sudanese government(WORST CORRUPTION EVER) since the peace treaty with the North.

He doesnt mention that South Sudan currently has 5 MILLION people suffering from FAMINE due to their government following Israeli agenda's to Attack north sudan and weaken their army. Lets give them food instead of weapons!!!

He doesn't mention why 70% of South Sudan land has been either Sold/leased since their independence 11 months ago.

Its very clear to anyone who knows history and current events who's the "Bad Guy" in this War. Israel is using the South sudanese leaders to do their dirty work and weaken sudanese government inorder for Israel to control the whole region!!

HE IS PERSUADING AMERICANS TO SPEND THEIR TAX MONEY TO FIGHT ISRAEL'S WAR OF MID-EAST DOMINATION!!

DON'T BE FOOLED PEOPLE.

5.0 out of 5 stars When oil eventually buys peace.
Reviewed in France on October 1, 2012
This book is a sharp and concise description of the war and peace processes in Sudan, yet it is very rich, well documented, with personal insights from the author who lived there as a key player for some time. Andrew Natsios does a great job and the book contains everything people need to know about this issue, as announced on the front cover. I would have emphasized more the key watershed event when the SPLA blew up the pipeline in 2001, which taught Al Bashir some key parameters of the game, and led him to seek for peace. Like most American analysts, Natsios emphasizes too much the role played by George W. Bush in the peace process, while he underestimates the fact that the blown up pipeline convinced Al Bashir that cooperating with the SPLA was necessary for him to reap the benefits of oil production. Still, the book provides a lot of food for thought and must be read by all people interested in war and peace in Africa, as well as by the stability of the global oil market.
