With the walls closing in, Navy SEAL sniper James Reece is on a race to dismantle a conspiracy that has forced America to her knees in the latest high-octane page-turner that seems ripped from the headlines from the “hottest author on the thriller scene today” (The Real Book Spy), #1 New York Times bestseller Jack Carr.

You think you know James Reece. Think again.

A storm is on the horizon. America’s days are numbered. A Chinese submarine has gone rogue and is navigating towards the continental United States, putting its nuclear missiles within striking distance of the West Coast.

A rising Silicon Valley tech mogul with unknown allegiances is at the forefront of a revolution in quantum computing and Artificial Intelligence.

A politician controlled by a foreign power is a breath away from the Oval Office.

Three seemingly disconnected events are on a collision course to ignite a power grab unlike anything the world has ever seen.

The country’s only hope is a quantum computer that has gone dark, retreating to the deepest levels of the internet, learning at a rate inconceivable at her inception. But during her time in hiding, she has done more than learn. She has become a weapon. She is now positioned to act as either the country’s greatest savior or its worst enemy. She is known as “Alice” and her only connection to the outside world is to a former Navy SEAL sniper named James Reece who has left the violence of his past life behind.

Will there be blood?

Count on it!

Will the forces that threaten to destroy the United States be enough to light the fuse of Reece’s resurrection? From “master novelist” (
Ballistic magazine) Jack Carr comes his most intense thriller to date, pressing “emotional buttons that other writers wouldn’t dare explore” (The Real Book Spy).

Reading | First of the series
I would typically tell someone to start at he beginning so I am going against my own advice. I have been listening to Jack for a while on podcasts, through the lens of Ther Amazon Terminal List series (wonderful adventure), and I finally decided to read a book. The level of detail is something I respect. I have an interest in starting from the beginning now. The love Jack has dor his readers and the history of this genre jumps off the pages. I am excited to begin, again.

First, this is another excellent work from Jack Carr. The character James Reece continues his encounters with evil on the world stage, with the assistance of Alice, the AI entity. We write in very different genres, but I have a deep admiration for his literary style, depth of research, and character development. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is suspense filled, action oriented, and a deep dive into the work of SOFs. The pages are filled with political intrigue as a back drop to what can only be called a “rough go of it” for his main character. And yes, the gun and tactical gear porn is freakin’ awesome.

Jack Carr writes fantastic books. Red Sky Mourning had me very engrossed and a nail biter. It fills in the gap for an action thriller and also helped me get my James Bond fix. Sadly, there aren't any summer movies I am interested in seeing and on the Bond front the only things are crickets, tumbleweeds, and intervals of deafening silence. I enjoyed the book from start to finish. I love Jack's rich detail and pace. I had a great time looking for the James Bond references in the story. I also had fun imagining it as a summer blockbuster action movie. I hope Jack Carr writes another James Reece book. But if he doesn't, I am happy with the seven that he did write.

I simultaneously read and listened to this book. With Jack Carr at the helm and Ray Porter picking up the narration, it is how shall we say…unputdownable? Mr. Carr has clearly evolved his game and is at the top of it. It’s hard to believe that he has managed the transition from world-class operator to world-class novelist, but here we are. His passion for all things war and all things books is highlighted on every page.

In part, it is a book about our near-term technological potential. As such, it deals with Promethean themes. Will our technology be a blessing or a catastrophe for the world? We have entered an age of unknowns. Will AI be a benevolent force in the world, freeing us from drudgery; or will AI become AGI that becomes ASI, so incomprehensible to our puny minds that we lose all control? We don’t yet know. Will quantum computing give us the ability to solve all of our problems or just create problems so big that we will all be undone? TBD. Whatever your viewpoint on these issues, it is undeniable that they are both supremely current and interesting. Jack Carr weaves these into his story with a deft touch.

The book is also a what-if scenario in the realm of the world’s two superpowers’ geopolitical postures. I won’t go into detail, but the scenes depicted are an all-too-plausible vision of what could go wrong if we continue down our respective trajectories.

The characters portrayed in the novel are characteristically well-thought out and engaging. James Reece is as exciting as ever. Katie, the Hastings’s, Vic, Andy all play a solid part in moving the novel along.

Most importantly, Mr. Carr is an inspiration. A warrior poet. Someone who has the background bona fides to serve as a model for those of us who still believe in the idea of this country. He respects and honors the military, in his words and actions. He also has garnered substantial cultural capital. This is no small thing.

So, all in all, the book is a must-read. If you like military thrillers, you cannot go wrong.

I thought the story was pretty good and had a classic Tom Clancy feel to it. My knock and this has been something I see more and more from this author and others is the “over marketing” of products and it just feels like a cheap marketing stunt. Also, the amount of indulgent food descriptions felt unnecessary. Make it one scene but I don’t care about the different wines and various alcohol and felt it would’ve tightened the story up without the description

RED SKY MOURNING by Jack Carr

Truly excellent. One measure of a great series is sustainability. Can the author maintain the excellence over time. Keep the reader engaged. Continue to develop the characters. Tie the current narrative into the arc of the series. Further, with a series such as this, the author needs something fresh every time. A new journey that surpasses the last installment. With a series such as this, it’s a heavy lift. In fact, when I finished reading ONLY THE DEAD last summer, that was my concern for what comes next. Where does Mr. Carr go from here? How can he possibly top this?

Rest assured, RED SKY MOURNING does all of the above and more.

This latest installment has everything you expect from a Jack Carr novel; intrigue, frenetic action, foreign locales, threats that cause the blood to run cold, and, of course, the cast of characters we’ve all come to love. And yet there’s more. There always is. Subtle nods to the greats of the genre and in specific, one of the godfathers, Ian Fleming. There are gems a plenty in this installment. One of them personal.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Carr, albeit it briefly. I happened to be wearing a specific shirt, and he noted that there’s a key scene in RSM where the character Ox wears the same. I had no idea. What Mr. Carr couldn’t have known is the exchange between the character Ox and Reece on p.329 – “Nice purse, by the way,” Reece said. “It’s a satchel.” (Ox replies) – is one I’ve had on multiple occasions. I laughed out loud.

Loved it. So well done. Not to be missed.

Jack Carr continues to surprise and delight me with his inventive storytelling and what-the-actual-ef-just-happened plot twists. This is a spy novel but it made me cry, laugh, think deeply, feel proud and patriotic, look up new words, and find gratitude for my life and my country. He leaves me in awe. This is a fantastic book and if you are not reading, following, listening to Carr, what are you even doing with your life?! Jack Carr is going down in history as a once-in-a-generation talent, his books a masterclass. Get to reading!

Seventh book in the series. It can surely be read stand alone given its end to end storyline. But part of reading the series is to learn, understand and follow the struggles and drives of the main character, so I recommend reading the books in order. As for the book, I’m just so impressed by Jack Carr’s research, knowledge and way of writing. He says that he’s always mindful about the time we readers invest in the book and his work, and it definitely shows in the way that each sentence adds to the story and flow. Needless to say, I just love the books and as soon as I reach the last page I’m hoping that the next one comes out soon. This is a must read for anyone into the genre of political thrillers. Thanks a lot and great work Jack Carr!
