Rick Riordan is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, the Kane Chronicles, and the Heroes of Olympus. He is also the author of the multi-award-winning Tres Navarre mystery series for adults.

For fifteen years, Rick taught English and history at public and private middle schools in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Texas. In 2002, Saint Mary's Hall honored him with the school's first Master Teacher Award.

While teaching full time, Riordan began writing mystery novels for grownups. His Tres Navarre series went on to win the top three national awards in the mystery genre - the Edgar, the Anthony and the Shamus. Riordan turned to children's fiction when he started The Lightning Thief as a bedtime story for his oldest son.

Having recently read Rick Riordan’s Heroes of Olympus series, I decided to tackle his Trials of Apollo series (which includes The Hidden Oracle, The Dark Prophecy, The Burning Maze, The Tyrant’s Tomb, and The Tower of Nero) and found it just as enjoyable.

Zeus blames Apollo for the happenings that occur previously in the Heroes of Olympus series and, to punish his son, drops him literally into a garbage dumpster in New York City—sans his immortality and godly powers—with a junior driver’s license proclaiming him to be Lester Papadopoulos. He’s got to survive as a flabby, sixteen-year-old boy with pimples until he can convince his dad to allow Apollo to return to Olympus. A mortal Apollo has plenty of enemies who’d like to see him dead, including former friends, enemies, and lovers such as Caligula, Nero, and Commodus as well as his ancient enemy, Python. He teams up with Meg, a daughter of Demeter and step-daughter of Nero, who claims Apollo as his slave.

As always, Riordan is witty, often laugh-out-loud funny as he blends pop culture (Apollo apparently knew and influenced everyone from jazz musicians to rock-and-rollers) with twists on Greek and Roman mythology. He also does a bang-up job giving Apollo, who starts out as a typical arrogant, egotistical god with a superiority complex, a delightful character arc as he becomes more human, more tolerant, more caring. The book is a rousing, rollicking adventure with a great message for youngsters. I have previously credited Riordan’s writing for triggering my son’s love of reading, and that certainly would apply to this series—except that he’s now an adult reading Star Wars books ad nauseum.

Apollo and his crew make it to Indianapolis where there is an army waiting of monsters seeking out them and their new friends. This was a great addition to the Trials of Apollo series and I really enjoyed the narration of this book. Highly recommend for middle grades readers.

In this book, Apollo has left Camp Half-Blood behind with Leo, Calypso and our favorite mechanical dragon, Festus, to restore the Oracles, demigod communication and to (hopefully) regain his Godly prowess and return to Mount Olympus.

Oh goodness, Apollo is a Dork and breaks the fourth wall almost as much as Deadpool! (But in a more kid friendly manner.) Apollo is such a sassy, narcissistic character who you can’t help but like, even with his hilarious disdain for us mortals and our mortal ways of doing things. But I can already see a new side to Apollo unfolding throughout the pages of series as it continues. I have thoughts that his heart is growing, not unlike that of the Grinch, and that Apollo is learning about family and friendship and a new sense of home because so far the stories seem to center around a safe haven for our hero friends and well… let’s face it, the Gods seem to have a disconnect when it comes to mortal lives. So I’m curious to see how these feelings of Apollo’s, lessons and friendships he is gaining will affect him once he returns to Olympus.

Besides Apollo we see the return of some familiar characters (YES!!) and meet many new and endearing ones, as well as a new sanctuary for those who seek one.

This book is full of adventure, a few twists, and lots of laughs and even has some adorable LGBTQ characters that I honestly adored. You know, Apollo himself is bisexual. And if you ever get curious while reading one of Riordan’s books, Google and discover even more about the mythology behind the story and see how Riordan keeps it true to history, but tweaked to fit the stories. Definitely cannot wait for the next branch of Apollo’s (or Lester’s Papadopoulos’s) adventures in The Burning Maze!

This book awed me, The slight humour and the quest goes on! Spoiler! Commodes was really a mad man, The spectacles were the only reason he did all of this, Which made him a little crazy in person. It had got me laughing sometimes and also understanding the actions of the characters and even (little bit) relating to them. This book will always be the best Trials of Apollo book for me. I have read 1,3,4 and extra hype for the final book where they face Nero. I wonder how Meg will react to her stepfather/Beast.
