Review
"Riordan fans will find all of the key elements here: wisecracking narration, underdog kid turned hero (well, god turned underdog turned hero in this case), mythological core, and robust side characters who round out the field. This is familiar territory for Riordan, but the formula works so well, and Apollo is just so appealingly unpleasant, that there’s little to fault in this adventure."―Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

Zeus blames Apollo for the happenings that occur previously in the Heroes of Olympus series and, to punish his son, drops him literally into a garbage dumpster in New York City—sans his immortality and godly powers—with a junior driver’s license proclaiming him to be Lester Papadopoulos. He’s got to survive as a flabby, sixteen-year-old boy with pimples until he can convince his dad to allow Apollo to return to Olympus. A mortal Apollo has plenty of enemies who’d like to see him dead, including former friends, enemies, and lovers such as Caligula, Nero, and Commodus as well as his ancient enemy, Python. He teams up with Meg, a daughter of Demeter and step-daughter of Nero, who claims Apollo as his slave.
As always, Riordan is witty, often laugh-out-loud funny as he blends pop culture (Apollo apparently knew and influenced everyone from jazz musicians to rock-and-rollers) with twists on Greek and Roman mythology. He also does a bang-up job giving Apollo, who starts out as a typical arrogant, egotistical god with a superiority complex, a delightful character arc as he becomes more human, more tolerant, more caring. The book is a rousing, rollicking adventure with a great message for youngsters. I have previously credited Riordan’s writing for triggering my son’s love of reading, and that certainly would apply to this series—except that he’s now an adult reading Star Wars books ad nauseum.

The Trials of Apollo (book 1) Review
Rick Rordan Greek mythology and fantasy, titled The Trials Of Apollo, express the god Apollo’s hard times after having his godly power taken away and the mission he must go through. This book has a very deep and enticing plot that will suck the reader into the story displaying many challenges throughout the novel, showing the theme of withstanding hard times.
The story begins with Apollo instantly put into a difficult possession. He is saved by his new friend Meg and they seek out help and end up in Camp Half Blood. Apollo later realizes that the oracle is broken and he needs to fix it but while he is doing an activity for the camp he finds the oracle. They later proceed on admission to save and fix the oracle; their mission will be very challenging.
I enjoyed reading this book very much and there are almost only good words for it. The plot goes very well with the actual history of Greek mythology and flows smoothly with it considering Apollo had lost his powers more than once already. I also enjoyed all the characters and their personalities and Apollo’s personality I felt would be very accurate to him in real life. Two things I did not love about this book but were not huge deals was that I felt that Petrcy Jackson could have had a bigger role in the story and that could have helped the beginning of the story get off better. Another thing that I disagreed with was the woods at the camp were made out to be very dangerous while in the other books connected to this one such as the percy Jackson series the woods were not nearly as dangerous and they had games within the woods. Rick Rordan writes very fluidly from a first person perspective. He uses lots of similes, metaphors, personification, and comparisons.
This read is best for people from the age of 12 to about 16 or 17 but also anyone interested in Greek mythology would be intrigued. This book was somewhat long with about 373 pages long. I think this book should be read because it shows how important it is to have people by your side and to trust those people.
Works Cited
I had a love/hate relationship with Apollo in this one. He is definitely not at all how I envision him to be. But Riordan’s versions of the gods rarely are but … At first I found him quite humorous but that quickly faded and I was absolutely over him. I was over him being self-absorbed and whiny. His change didn’t happen until the last fourth of the book and while I’m glad it came, it really felt like we spent WAY too much time with whiny self-absorbed Apollo for me to truly appreciate him.
I loved Meg from the get go. It was sooooooo nice to see a Daughter of Demeter and one so strong. I love Demeter, she’s so badass, and her kids are definitely badass as well. Meg is just full of life and amazing and I just love her.
Apollo’s kids. I love them. Will, Austin, and Katie, they’re all great. And while they’re all good at healing they’re all into different things. It was nice to see that since Apollo is the god of so many things. I really hope that we see all three of them in the following books.
Nico. NICO. N.I.C.O. I love him, he’s one of my absolute favorite of Riordan’s characters and I am so, so glad that he was in this book. I definitely hope that we see him more, I love that he had such a big part in this one. It was also nice that we got to have a tiny bit of Percy, I really didn’t expect to have him at all, so that was a nice surprise! I would love it if we got more of him but I doubt that will happen.
PLOT:
This one follows the Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus books so I definitely recommend reading those two series first. Yes that’s 10 books but trust me, you will NOT be disappointed, and the plots of all of them tie in together. You don’t NEED to read them, but this one DOES have spoilers for the earlier books. So I really don’t want to tell you much. But Apollo got punished for something that happened in The Heroes of Olympus series and Zeus banished him from Olympus and made him a mortal and before he can be returned to his godly self he has to go through some trials. XD Seriously go read the PJO & HOO books.
WORLDBUILDING:
Like I mentioned this one follows the previous series and is just like all of his other Greek Mythology books. The humor and such is all there, pretty much all the elements that make it a Riordan novel.
OVERALL:
I didn’t think this one was as good as the PJO or HOO books but I am definitely going to keep reading them.

Okay, I’ve got to appreciate everybody who trusts Rick Riordan in writing good books. Because, I think this book should be the definition of a “Good book”. Not a great book, Not a bad book, A good book. The Sword of Summer is like a blowtorch of sluggishness. The narrating style was Rick’s homeground, first-person (Not a minus), but the Sword of Summer just felt… Sloppy. After being blow-torched and witnessed Rick’s said-to-be pinnacle, I read the Trials of Apollo - The Hidden Oracle. This went the first-person path and delivered me through the journey and got me to the destination excellently.
The main characters were Apollo (obviously), and Meg (Margaret, call her that and you’ll be cannibal kabab.). The beginning was quite interesting. It was like a drama with quick exchanges of dialogues. The point of the book is, Apollo is sent to the mortal world, as a mortal, as a punishment, for blessing his son Octavian, an evil roman demigod who insists on war on the greeks. Zeus decides sending Apollo through a series of trials will help him understand his mistake. The narration was really funny. Apollo constantly complains about how he is supposed to be at Mount Olympus watching other demigods, you know.. Do their thing. Meg helps Apollo from a duo of street dudes robbing him.
The book brought back old demigods and introduced new ones. The book was quite a read.
The minus. There’s always a minus, isn’t there? Meg in the beginning seemed extremely clueless about demigods, the gods and mythology and stuff. She told Apollo she was a demigod but didn’t know the word. It made me wonder, Is she actually telling the truth? Then when you get to the ending, at the Grove of Dodona, she’s all like There’s no we. Once this is over, you're on your own, Apollo. How can somebody so clueless, get so serious?
But overall I think this is a great read. Definitely have a go at it, and review what you think. Anyway, if you found this review helpful, definitely tell amazon that.

Adventure in every page I will read it again
This little verse resumes the whole book. In every chapter you will find these type of rhymes at the beginning that will make you smile. Rick Riordan did it again he make me stay awake till 3 am to continue reading. Far from being just another fantasy book it also make us question ourselves. We all love Apollo, his words not mine and he has that type of humor that makes an awesome reading, the best reading. This serie promises to be better than any he has ever written. We can't wait Rick please write faster.
I recommend it a lot and if you haven't read any of Rick I suggest to read his previous series before you start with these book. I will only have like that it lasted longer because the way Rick make us live the story is unique and is very hard to accomplish.
