What if you thought you murdered your best friend? And if everyone else thought so too? And what if the truth doesn't matter?
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.
But now the phenomenally huge hit true crime podcast "Listen for the Lie," and its too-good looking host Ben Owens, have decided to investigate Savvy’s murder for the show’s second season. Lucy is forced to return to the place she vowed never to set foot in again to solve her friend’s murder, even if she is the one that did it.
The truth is out there, if we just listen.

Review
“Listen for the Lie is a page-turner from the first sentence to the very last. In addition to being a world-class whodunit, full of carefully doled-out twists, Lucy is a terrific character, feisty and funny and, it turns out, brave as hell. It’s great fun. Readers will rip through this one.”
―Stephen King
“Original and deliciously dark with a wicked sense of humor. An addictive page-turner that will keep you guessing until the end.”
―Alice Feeney, New York Times bestselling author
“A singular voice that explodes off the page, Amy Tintera's writing flashes with sharp comebacks and pointed commentary as she expertly knits her web of secrets and small town lies. Hands down the most fun I've had reading about murder.”

“Amy Tintera’s highly compelling voice grips you from the opening line and won’t let you go. A delight from start to finish.”
―Alex Michaelides, bestselling author of The Silent Patient and The Fury
“Every so often, a book comes along that takes you for a ride--now buckle up, because Amy Tintera has written it. Listen for the Lie explores the cruelest kind of world through the eyes of a woman whose grit is only outmatched by her razor-sharp wit. This bitingly funny and subversive thriller is one of the freshest and fiercest you'll read this year.”
―Courtney Summers, New York Times bestselling author of Sadie
“Laugh-out-loud funny, thrilling and twisty, edgy and scary, but also surprisingly sweet. I loved it!”

―The Washington Post
“This is the debut thriller by Tintera, whose previous books have been for young readers, and it's so assured that I can't wait to read more from her. Young readers’ loss may be thriller lovers’ gain.”

Amy Tintera started writing novels as a kid during her middle school science classes, which probably explains why she has always been very bad at science. She is now the author of several novels for young adults, including Reboot, a Kids Indie Next pick and YALSA Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers, the Ruined series, The Q, and All These Monsters, a YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults selection.
She has degrees in journalism and film, and worked as a talent agency assistant in Hollywood before becoming an author. Raised in Austin, Texas, she frequently sets her novels in the Lone Star state, but she now lives in Los Angeles, where there's far less humidity, but not nearly enough Tex-Mex.
Listen for the Lie, her first novel for adults, will be published March 5, 2024 by Celadon/Macmillan.

4/5 ⭐️
Lucy Chase may have forgotten Plumpton but Plumpton has not forgotten her. It is hard to ignore the girl who supposedly murdered her best friend but does not remember anything. Savvy Harper was the town’s sweetheart and a charmer, especially with the men. Lucy and Savvy were inseparable so everyone was shocked when Lucy was found roaming the streets covered in Savvy’s blood. Five years have passed since that horrible night and Lucy has moved on to start fresh in LA.
When a family event brings Lucy home, she is forced to face the past. Not only does she have to answer to the town, but Ben Owens, a famous true-crime podcaster shows up and has questions for Lucy. Lucy has never spoken to anyone or given an interview until now. She decides to help Ben with his podcast “Listen for the Lie” and solve Savvy’s murder once and for all. Even if this means she could be the one who did it.
Listen for the Lie was a fast-paced, twisty mystery that I could not put down. The writing format alternated among real-time, flashbacks and Ben’s podcasts. The best part of this compelling thriller was its dark humor. Also, Lucy is a phenomenal character with her sass and sense of humor. She is a hot mess but her quick wit and sarcasm make her very likable. I have a few complaints about this book. The first one is the amnesia trope is overdone! And the second one is Lucy’s family is appalling; everyone except her grandmother. Lastly, I have so many questions about the ending. Lucy makes a very vague statement that leaves me bewildered. I like mysteries wrapped up neatly with a bow.

I really liked the audiobook - both the narrator and the format (switching between book chapters and podcast episodes). One review I read mentioned that the reviewer found the intro/outro music to the podcasts irksome, it was the opposite for me. Felt like a real podcast. (It was no Serial, but what is? 😉)
Overall happy I used my Audible credit on this 👍🏻

Amy Tintera's writing is so witty it had me laughing out loud on a regular basis. I enjoyed following the main character Lucy as she tried to find out who was behind her best friend's murder while struggling with her inner psychopathic voice and wondering whether it had been her all along (she had amnesia so has no idea what happened that night, a fun twist on the unreliable narrator trope).
Highly recommended for fans of Holly Jackson, Gillian Flynn, and those with a dark sense of humour.

Lucy is a brilliant character...flawed, witty with a dark sense of humour and a voice in her head driving her to kill. I loved the podcast aspect of this book and slowly uncovering lots of secrets that led to Savvys murder. Its a compelling read. There were a lot of characters introduced and keeping up with how they all linked was a bit of work at times. The ending was very unexpected...definitely not the way I personally expected or would have liked. Don't trust anyone!
