The epic conclusion to the intensely romantic and beautifully written story that started in Divine Rivals.

Two weeks have passed since Iris Winnow returned home bruised and heartbroken from the front, but the war is far from over. Roman is missing, and the city of Oath continues to dwell in a state of disbelief and ignorance. When Iris and Attie are given another chance to report on Dacre’s movements, they both take the opportunity and head westward once more despite the danger, knowing it’s only a matter of time before the conflict reaches a city that’s unprepared and fracturing beneath the chancellor’s reign.

Since waking below in Dacre’s realm, Roman cannot remember his past. But given the reassurance that his memories will return in time, Roman begins to write articles for Dacre, uncertain of his place in the greater scheme of the war. When a strange letter arrives by wardrobe door, Roman is first suspicious, then intrigued. As he strikes up a correspondence with his mysterious pen pal, Roman will soon have to make a decision: to stand with Dacre or betray the god who healed him. And as the days grow darker, inevitably drawing Roman and Iris closer together…the two of them will risk their very hearts and futures to change the tides of the war.

Review

"The war may be chaos, but the symmetries of these books are exquisite." - New York Times

"In this sequel, the stakes are higher, the scope is bigger, and there are more overt fantasy elements than in its predecessor. A banger of a duology ending." -

Fell Short of the First Book
**Mild Spoilers for this review**I LOVED Divine Rivals. It would be pretty hard to top the story in the first book, but I don’t think this one was anywhere near as good. The first chapter left a horrible taste in my mouth. After everything Roman did for Iris in book 1 and everything he went through trying to get to Iris while Forest was dragging her away, Iris goes back to Oath with her brother and returns to work like life is normal?? There is no effort on her part to go back and try to find where he was taken or what is happening to him and it ruined her whole character for me.I did really like how the author was able to reverse the roles in book two and Roman is the one receiving letters not knowing who he is writing to. Iris and Roman spend pretty much the whole of this book apart so there are hardly any heartwarming moments between the two of them. I would have liked the story better if they could have been together through the end of the fight. I had a feeling that a particular death was coming at the end. Even though it was emotional and heartbreaking I actually like that the author put it in. I don’t like when books are written with horrors of war and bloody battles but somehow every character is ok in the end. The death made all of the emotions and wreckage left at the end of everything resonate more.Overall I loved these books and would definitely recommend this series.

This was a beautiful ending to a love story in the middle of a war between Gods. The devastation of war and its survivors is beautifully told. The descriptions written of the landscape above and below were extremely well written. The relationships and love that existed and continued to grow; even among the devastation of war was both a heartbreaking and incredible to experience. I would love to know more about Tobias and Attie but I’m sure they got there happily ever after. It was nice to see that although the war had changed everyone in some way, in the end they were still the same people. Iris and Kitt are just an example of how true love really can conquer anything. They both fought and sacrificed for each other. And it was nice to see they got their happy ending in the end. I loved the magic throughout the book as well. I look forward to reading more fantasy and magic in the future.

Not quite as good as the first, but still a worthy ending to this duology.

What worked well:

- The writing is absolutely beautiful. Rebecca Ross truly is an incredible storyteller.

- Roman and Iris have the most beautiful relationship and are one of my favorite book couples of all time. There's something so sweet and simple about their relationship. It's quite different than the relationships you see in most romantasy books, which I found very refreshing (and frankly more realistic).

What didn't work so well:

- I felt Dacre's character lacked some backstory and development, which led to a lackluster storyline. I was hoping for more here, and it just kinda fell flat.

First Impressions
Ruthless Vows is the conclusion to this epic duo series by Rebecca Ross. I didn't know what I expected, all I knew is that "Divine Rivals" blew my heart out of the water with that ending and I had to jump into this conclusion and it was everything I could have hoped for and more. I literally took my time reading this because it was so good. I didn't even look at my progress percentage like I normally do because I was so swept away by this story. The conclusion is not an easy one, but its a journey of heart and soul and courage and I soaked it up like a sponge and never wanted to let go of this one.

First Line
There was never any doubt in her mind, even after all these dust-streaked mortal years, that Dacre would one day come for her.

Summary
In the previous book, our couple, Kitt and Iris were seperated by the consequences of battle and war. Now Iris is working in the city of Aoth to try to get word out of the truths of what is happening with Dacre and his agenda. Kitt has been healed by Dacre but at a very heavy price, forced to write for him with no memory of who he was before or the woman who holds his heart. But as Roman gets closer to Oath and as Iris gets closer to Roman, they find their way back to each other. But will they be able to bring peace to their people once again or will vengeance of a demi god destroy them all...

What I Loved
There was so much to enjoy about this one here. I was instantly drawn into this story and my heart bled for Iris and Kitt and the journey they need to go through. There is such longing between them that cuts deep to the reader. I was so fascinated to see where Ross would take this story. I can definitely see the talent that she hides behind and if you enjoyed the journey in "Divine Rivals" then you most definitely will be excited with what is delivered in this one.

The seperation between them just after they get married and embrace the love that they have for each other was so real and heart wrenching. You feel the distance between them and you just want them to find each other again. Even though they are apart, they find their own ways to connect...through writing letters. And the words that they share with each other as they rediscover their love and Kitt finds his own way back to even being a stronger man melts the heart. I was intrigued about the plot with Dacre and it stunned me in so many ways. Even though some of it was predictable, some of it really had some turns I didn't expect to happen. And there were some actions taken that I literally wanted to get pom pom's and cheer my couple on. Even though it ends in a HEA, doesn't mean that Iris and Kitt don't lose some people they love deeply. That broke my heart....I was literally sobbing. But there is also such a message of redemption, hope and healing that completes this story. Definitely a story worthy of getting physical copies on my shelves and reading again pretty soon because I am not ready to let go of this couple.

What I Struggled With
Nothing.

Overall View
Ruthless Vows is a conlusion that is a epic sweeping finale of truths being revealed, personal rediscovery and the power and atonement behind honest true love that wins the day! AN FLAWLESS WINNER OF A READ!

I'm a little bummed that this book seemed a little more rushed (or maybe just the shiney of Rebecca Ross wore off quickly after Divine Rivals), but the ironically poor copyediting despite her specific praise to her copyeditor in the Acknowledgements killed me. So much so, here's just one list of overused words/phrases and my estimate of about how often they arrived on yet another page. There were additional editing/writing issues that bugged me as well, but not so notably as the over use of at least the ones below. Seriously, Rebecca, dear...just borrow one of Roman's 6+ thesauruses.

I will say though, if she hadn't written such a great story AND be willing and able to kill some of her darlings and do it fairly well, I'd have needed to drop another star, but I really did love this story and she did a great job showing vs telling.
