The instant New York Times bestseller!

Infused with magic and romance, this sweeping fantasy adventure inspired by the legend of Mulan follows a young woman determined to choose her own destiny—even if that means going against everyone she loves.

The Three Kingdoms are at war, but Meilin’s father refuses to answer the imperial draft. Trapped by his opium addiction, he plans to sell Meilin for her dowry. But when Meilin discovers her husband-to-be is another violent, ill-tempered man, she realizes that nothing will change for her unless she takes matters into her own hands.

The very next day, she disguises herself as a boy and enlists in her father’s place.

In the army, Meilin's relentless hard work brings her recognition, friendship—and a growing closeness with Sky, a prince turned training partner. But has she simply exchanged one prison for another? As her kingdom barrels toward destruction, Meilin begins to have visions of a sea dragon spirit that offers her true power and freedom, but with a deadly price.

With the future of the Three Kingdoms hanging in the balance, Meilin will need to decide whom to trust—Sky, who inspires her loyalty and love; the sea dragon spirit, who has his own murky agenda; or an infuriating enemy prince who makes her question everything she once knew—about her kingdom and about her own heart.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The Night Ends with Fire is what blessedly happens when the themes of Hua Mulan’s legend are combined with wuxia principles and a powerful new voice in adult fantasy. K.X. Song’s soaring, emotive prose takes the reader on an unforgettable adventure in a painstakingly realized world, laced with fascinating characters that effortlessly play off of one another and twists that leave us reeling. I devoured every page of this truly epic tale.”—Thea Guanzon, USA Today and New York Times bestselling author of The Hurricane Wars

“Sweepingly epic and tenderly romantic,
The Night Ends With Fire is a fiercely feminist adventure about a young woman fighting to shape her destiny in a world of lore, magic, and war. One not to miss for fans of Mulan.”—Amélie Wen Zhao, New York Times bestselling author of Song of Silver, Flame Like Night

"An awesome, engaging fantasy that takes a hard look at the cost of being true to yourself.  Adventure, romance and dragons abound in this fantastic tale."—Patricia Briggs, #1
New York Times bestselling author of the Mercy Thompson series

“Exhilarating and intricately told,
The Night Ends with Fire is both a breathless adventure and an unflinching portrayal of power, female ambition, and the costs that come with it.” —Grace D. Li, New York Times bestselling author of Portrait of a Thief

The Night Ends with Fire is a cinematic tale of epic proportions, with jaw-dropping twists and a take-no-prisoners heroine yearning for freedom, recognition, and glory. An explosive start to a captivating new series.” —Axie Oh, New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea

“As defiant and courageous as its protagonist,
The Night Ends With Fire ushers in a stunning new fantasy world. I couldn’t put it down - and I know I’ll be thinking about it for some time to come.”—Nalini Singh, New York Times bestselling author of the Psy-Changeling series

 "
The Night Ends With Fire is a truly enthralling epic fantasy. I was blown away by how good it was! With an immersive and compelling story led by a seriously fabulous heroine and sparkling with both magic and romance, it's the perfect wuxia drama, and I loved it. Make sure you have plenty of time free when you start reading, because it quickly becomes addictive!"—India Holton, bestselling author of The Ornithologist’s Field Guide to Love

“The climactic ending will leave readers anticipating the duology’s conclusion. . . . Song’s poetic prose brings together cardinal spirits, a flawed protagonist, and a plot inspired by the legend of Mulan.”Library Journal

"Legendary in scope with unforgettable characters,
The Night Ends With Fire is an incredible journey that will set your imagination ablaze. Drawing on classics like Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Mulan, the machinations are complex, the vying factions fascinating, and Meilin's struggle for identity utterly gripping as she clashes with those who want to exploit her lixia for their own purposes. K.X. Song is going to set the literary scene on fire with her awesome new novel."—Peter Tieryas, author of the Mecha Samurai Empire series and Narrative Director at Nicalis

"Meilin’s rage was so potent, to the point that I had to question where her thoughts started, and where Qinglong’s ended. The girl at the beginning of the book is vastly different to the one at the end, which made Meilin wildly entertaining to read about, particularly in the second half of the book...Hai Meilin is slowly climbing the ranks of my favourite angry, messy and powerful female main characters in fiction, and I am so excited to see the chaos she ensues in the next installment."—Grimdark Magazine

good start to this new series
This is not normally my genre, but it was a pleasant surprise. Let me first preface this with I don’t really know the Mulan story, but I know this is in no way the Disney story. It has the same kick butt strong woman that I so love, but is darker than any Disney movie I’ve seen.Meillin hides her identity to join the army as a man and is able to succeed and do all that is expected of her. I loved the magic that helped her excel and make prudent choices. And that it also egged her on to challenge those choices.Meilin is hiding from her father and other men that have disrespected her and continues to struggle with who she is and where she belongs. The struggles continue through the book as she is let down.I am not a big romantasy reader and thought this was going to be it, but alas Meilin spends so precious few moments with the prince as herself but man were they good moments fraughtwith tension.I had no idea this was the start of the series, but the twist at the end and that cliffhanger have me hooked for the next book.Natalie Naudus narrated the story and kept me engaged as Meilin went on her journey. She sounded perfect for Meilin and was also able to voice all the other characters. It was such an enjoyable listen.

Stoked that K.X. Song's take on Mulan ripped off those mouse-ears and gave us a well-rounded, slightly unsure of herself, but highly capable heroine. This is the story you may have heard turned to the nth level. There are dragons, love triangles, battles, family drama, betrayal. And all of it so grippingly written, I didn't want to put it down.
This epic read is set in the time of The Three Kingdoms, another classic Chinese tale. I had tried to read the translated version of The Three Kingdoms, but it was tough sledding with all the names. Thankfully, Song uses names that are easy to keep straight.
Great read. Fingers crossed for more.

This retelling of Mulan had really good world building and great design overall. Having enjoyed the Disney version my whole life, it was different seeing her story from an Asian perspective, which means this wasn't the happy song-filled story I'm used to. I loved the dragon's snarky lines, which reminded me a lot of Tairn from Fourth Wing.

The only reason I'm knocking this down to four stars is the ending. It feels ridiculous that things would unravel in that way just because things weren't as her friends believed. I'm hoping the next book will change my mind, but I was super disappointed with how everyone treated her in the final chapters. Fingers crossed that she is able to survive what comes her way.

The Night Ends with Fire is a more feminist take on Mulan that is more relatable to the modern woman. This book's main character is much more nuanced and multilayered than the Disney heroine you grew up with. While the original story asks 'what would you do for your father?' this book asks 'what would you do for yourself?'.
Our main character is named, not Mulan, but Meilin. Meilin lives in a stifling patriarchal society where women have few freedoms and live under the subjugation of the men in their lives. Meilin joins the army, not out of filial piety, but a desire to be free from the chains that bind women.
Throughout Meilins journey to help save her friends, family, and city she simultaneously battles through societal expectations, the army's expectations, and above all else her own expectations. Meilins inner struggle and turmoil over her choices, wants, and desires make for a remarkably more intriguing and compelling character.
In the original Disney movie Mulan is happy to return to life as a normal, traditional woman after her country and father are saved. Meilins story subverts our expectations of the classic movie by asking 'what if Mulan wanted more?'. As a woman in today's society I found myself not only more invested in Meilins story but also able to relate to her more.
This feminist story has an exciting adventure and interesting characters but the heart of the story is Meilins personal journey. The setting is merely background in this innovative and unique character study of a woman defying society's expectations. I came for the fantasy world but stayed for Meilin. I highly recommend this book if you're looking for a story with a little more depth and dimension than the original folktale.

Ah Mulan. So many childhood memories are tied to this movie, so when I heard there was going to be a retelling, I was excited beyond belief.

Meilin was a wonderful character and I appreciated why she ran off to join the army. She needed to escape the situation that she was in and being forced into and saw it as her only option. As with any fantasy there was a lot of world building in the beginning, and I felt bogged down with new information and the pacing was slow. This is usually why I shy away from this genre; it is just almost too much for me to handle. But I persevered because, well Mulan and I felt that I was rewarded. I loved that there seemed to be scenes straight from the movies I knew as well as characters in the book. Not everything was the same, but enough to give me hints of familiarity and comfort. I enjoyed the inclusion of the cardinal spirits and their seals along with magic. And who doesn’t like dragons?

I think that this book is going to appeal to a wide audience and become this summer’s must read. Plus, I already ordered a gorgeous edition (not pictured) and am excited for it to come!

Make sure to grab a copy of this one, you won’t want to miss it.

“I needed to prove that I, as a woman, could be better than the rest of them. That I too could belong. That I too could be free.”

I loved that this is a retelling of Disney’s Mulan, which is one of my faves! Meilin is full of ambition and greed, which fuels her to join the army impersonating her fathers bastard son. She wants to prove that even as a woman she can do it, even better than men. She has more than this secret to keep though… she has access to the spirit realm, which can grant her magical abilities. In her culture though, spirit mediums are hunted and executed.

I like the second part of this book much more the than the first! I feel like the beginning is a little slow and predictable, but push through! I also didn’t love how greed was a big part of it (however I think this has to do with the spirit realm, and there’s something deeper to it).

Thank you NetGalley and K.X Song for this arc! I loved getting into a Mulan like world and story!

There was no foil-stamped case, or any case, for that matter with my order.
