“Though it’s dark, I’ll always find you. Though you’re stronger than me, I’ll always make sure that you’re safe. To me, you’ll always come first.”Four years ago I read Whitaker’s We Begin at the End and wanted to scream from my Covid isolated rooftop, just how brilliant it was. Instead, I started this account, to amplify books worthy of your attention. All the Colors of the Dark opens with a small town Missouri setting of the mid 1970s. Patch, a young boy born with one eye, embraces his uniqueness and takes on the role of a pirate, for fun and also for survival. Girls in the town and surrounding areas have started to go missing and Patch prevents one of these abduction attempts, setting the plot into motion. The result is a decades long journey of obsession, devotion, loss and love. There are 4 female characters who packed the most powerful punch in the ways they try to save a beautiful and broken Patch. One, so reminiscent of a certain “outlaw” in his previous novel, that it brought tears to my eyes. The use of art as a vehicle for imagery and discovery was unexpected and masterful, and enhanced the already brilliant police procedural elements of the story. From small town to big city America, Whitaker paints the U.S. landscape with such vivid clarity that it’s hard to believe he wrote it from the other side of the Atlantic. The plot, layered in multiple genres and mysteries, is impossible to summarize without spoilers which would risk diminishing a wonderfully immersive experience. This novel has the heart of the Edward/Shea relationship in Dear Edward and the eloquent prose of William Kent Krueger novels, making it my top contender for Best Book of 2024!

Thank you, Chris Whitaker, for reminding me what wonderful writing is all about. Lyrical, flowing, compelling. I have read far too many books lately that are filled with compound, sterile, forgettable sentences. Not yours. This is a hard book in so many ways. Hard truths. Hard characters. But the author brings it to us completely. Full of life and magic. I wanted to read as quickly as possible because I could not wait to get to the next part of the narrative, but at the same time I did not want to read too fast because this kind of writing is so unique. Highly recommended! Just read it.

ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK
Chris Whitaker

When I talk about Chris Whitaker, I want to start at the beginning, but it feels more appropriate if WE BEGIN AT THE END.

Someone is missing and she’s not the first. She most likely won’t be the last. There is a hunter in their small town, in their presence. And in the hunting, the hunters become the prey. But that’s just the story's beginning and I promised to start at the end.

Patch is a hard boy to forget and over the span of decades turns into a man most will wish they never met. But his story is long, and to understand his trajectory we must start at the beginning. At the end he will be forgiven, but his actions will not be forgotten.

ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK is a mystery, a thriller, a crime drama that spans states and decades. But in the end, ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK is a love story.

When the plane took off when the shades were drawn, when it got quiet, and when the lights were low, I went into the dark with Chris Whitaker. And when the plane landed, and I got to the end all I could see were ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK.

Reading over 600 pages in one sitting is not something I normally do but then again, I don’t normally get the pleasure of reading a Chris Whitaker novel. I was on an exceptionally long flight, and I needed an exceptional book to pull me through. ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK was just that.

ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK is not about who you should be, not who you pretend to be, not even who you aspire to be. It’s about who you are. When it matters, when it counts.

With crushing language, a superior grasp of what the English language can do, authentic characters, and a storyline that rivals only his last work, ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK provided an exceptional reading experience and I highly recommend it.

If I could give it ten stars I would!

Thanks to Netgalley and Crown Publishing | Crown for the advanced copy! It was a pleasure!

In 1975, in the small town of Monta Clare, Missouri, Patch and Saint are a pair of best friends and misfits whose lives are dramatically impacted when they find themselves involved in the attempted abduction of an affluent girl from their town. Spanning the course of several decades, All the Colors of the Dark follows the pair as they navigate life following the events of that fateful day.

This book was an elaborate amalgamation of multiple genres of fiction, making it a great suggestion for almost any type of reader. It is a tale of childhood friendship and the complexities of how that relationship evolves when the trials of adulthood change who each of us is on a fundamental level. It is a story of finding love and having the strength to either hold onto it or let it go. It is a game of cat and mouse, with two adversaries using cunning and skill to gain advantage over one another. It is a murder mystery and psychological thriller that will leave your heart pounding in your chest while you turn the pages to find out what happens. It is about family, and the powerful bonds that tie us together whether it be by blood or by choice. While reading this, I laughed, cried, gasped out loud, cringed, aww-ed, sighed, closed my eyes, got mad, smiled, and loved every moment of it.

My only critique for this work is that the chapters are entirely too short. Each spanning an average length of 2-3 pages, I felt as though I was never fully able to settle into reading, and it ultimately had a negative effect on both the pacing and my overall enjoyment of the book. To be honest, longer chapters (even if they were broken down into smaller sub-chapters) would have made this a 5 star read for me.

This book is a lot...a lot of love, pain, agony, suspence and calculations. The author is very good at painting a palate of anticipation. The characters are well developed. Without going into detail of the story, I say that if you like a tale of twists and turns, determination and undying love, then this is your read. It will clearly rank among the best of 2024.
This is my second book by Chris Whitaker. Both were well worth the accolades.
