Dr. Anthony Fauci served as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health from 1984 to 2022. He also served as the Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden. He is currently a Distinguished University Professor at Georgetown University with a joint appointment in the School of Medicine and the McCourt School of Public Policy. He has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Science, and the Mary Woodard Lasker Award for Public Service and has been awarded 62 honorary doctoral degrees, and is the author, coauthor, or editor of more than 1,400 scientific publications.

An extraordinary human being who has lived up to his potential. This was a great read. It’s inspiring and entertaining. As others have said, it will make you crave Italian food. At the very least, prepare for your binge read with a good bottle of wine at hand. It’s well written and does a thorough job of relating how he became the public figure we are so familiar with and to whom the world owes so much.
The title is well chosen. He chose to be on call for his entire working life. He seems not to have turned down many requests for his time and talent. The book includes peeks into his complicated life. I found the bedside care episodes to be more dramatic and moving than the parts which document his movement into administrative and governmental positions. The Covid and Trump years are really hard to read about without being sickened.
Some of the things that struck me –having a really robust K-12 education system is essential. We won’t be producing the next generation of Dr. Fauci’s if we don’t make massive and immediate investments in our education system.
I’m also struck by how he seems to have a lifelong habit of establishing and maintaining close personal and workplace friendships. Liking people, seeing them as potential allies rather than as competitors, seems to be characteristic of many people whose contributions are so impactful that they become public figures.
The importance of selecting a career that you truly love and which provides the opportunities for long term personal growth and development is essential for a really productive and satisfying life.
Being reminded of the various challenges America has faced was valuable. Seeing how a few really competent people were repeatedly recruited to assist in addressing these challenges makes you understand how fragile the whole system is. Even if we could use the model that produced Dr Fauci, how do we scale up to create the number of people of his caliber that a country of our size needs?
Like the best biographies and memoirs, this one teaches us both about the unique individual and about the society more broadly. It is thought provoking, humbling, entertaining, disheartening and worrying in pretty equal measures. It will speak to people embarking on their careers, raising children, deciding how to prioritize friendship, family, work demands, deciding who and what to vote for - in other words – all of us who read to grow. Getting the book out there to all of us should be considered another one of Dr Fauci’s great gifts to us. Thank you Doc, for all of your service.

I have always been interested in medicine and the health sciences and I could not put Dr. Fauci's book down. It was so inspiring and had a very good balance between writing about his personal life and his public life. He had an intense curiosity and a passion for science and medicine from a young age. He was very compassionate, devoted to his patients, his research on diseases and finding treatments, and he was a devoted family man. His writings about working with HIV, Anthrax, pandemic influenza, Ebola, Zika and Covid were fascinating. He had a good balance between the science and certain tidbits that the layman could understand and find very interesting.....such as "reservoir virus" a virus that does not leave the system of a person who has HIV but there are treatments. He also suggested that he thought "long covid" could also be associated with "reservoir virus"....a virus that does not leave the system in certain people that challenges the immune system. He described "drift"......the slight change in the circulating influenza virus caused by mutations in the genetic makeup of the virus each year. He also brought up the Cutter Laboratory's huge mistake in the 1955 polio vaccine where the Lab accidentally made vaccinations with live polio virus causing thousands of children to acquire polio and a few to die. He points out that many people associate science with absolutes when in fact science is a process that continually uncovers new information and treatment is developed and changes to include the new findings. This was a big problem for many Trump followers and other non believers who sent him death threats and even sent him white powdered substances in the mail.....his family also received so many threats. He received the National Medal of Science and the Presidential Medal of Freedom and is now a professor of Medicine and Public Policy at Georgetown University. He is so excited to work with young students of medicine and instill in them the curiosity and love of science and medicine that he has. He is my hero!!

This is one of the kindest humans. He is also brilliant. He devoted his life to preventing death by infectious diseases. That he stood firm in good science through politics and policy,sometimes evil lying and threatening he and his family, also makes this a profile in steadfastness and courage. I recommend this book especially to MAGA as maybe, even one, will understand the importance of good research and critical thinking. And he writes one heck of a story on a life he could have never imagined but one he never deserted and always led with kindness and extraordinary critical thinking and courage. Well written book explaining the professional life of an amazing gentleman. Explained how he got to where he could truly impact and help the American public and the world. It truly amazes me how folks mistrust the science so much they refuse to do what makes sense and puts themselves and others in danger. His impact on HIV/AIDS was phenomenal and he more often gives his fellow scientists in the different disciplines credit for getting a handle on this terrible disease.
Wish Dr. Fauci an enjoyable retirement and happy times with his Wife, Daughters, In-laws and Grandchildren.
