A new take on Agatha Christie’s classic murder mystery The Mysterious Affair at Styles, with iconic detective Hercule Poirot recast as a brilliant, brash teen girl named Holiday, and narrated by her childhood friend Linden, an athlete-scholar who fits right in at his elite prep school—all the while hiding some secrets of his own.
Michael Linden—or just Linden to his preppy boarding school pals—doesn’t belong in wealthy, storied Martha’s Vineyard. But when his roommate Jasper invites him to spend the end of summer at his massive beachfront home, August House, Linden tries his best to fit in. Linden wouldn’t call it lying, exactly. Though it turns out August House is full of liars.
Then someone is found unconscious in Jasper’s pool, and everyone has something to hide—Jasper, his beautiful sister Eliza, their older brother Wells, and their friends. The accident is written off as just that—an accident—but Linden begins to wonder...
Enter: Holiday Proctor. Linden’s childhood friend, and the one person on the island who knows the truth about Linden. There’s nothing Holiday loves more than a good old-fashioned mystery and she’s convinced there's a potential killer on the Vineyard. The only question is…who?

I have really been enjoying YA books lately and this was my first mystery. While I am not a huge Agatha Christie fan, I thought that this book was entertaining. I did struggle with this one being told from the perspective of a teenage boy. There were some scenes that I didn’t really care for and could have done without, and it seemed fairly obvious that the author was a woman. I also didn’t really feel that much happened in this book. The mystery wasn’t really a big deal and the pacing felt rather slow. It felt like a few teenagers just messing around. I did enjoy the setting and absolutely loved the beach town they were in and how wonderful some of the friendships were. This was truly a story of deep friendships and what we go through for them.
I felt that the narrator was perfect for the role of Linden. He really captured what it was like to be a teenage boy, with the enunciation and inclinations perfectly.
If you are looking for a fun remake, then I hope you check this one out.
Linden is going to visit a roommate from his prep school during the summer. His roommate family has a vacation estate on the beachfront. Linden has tried to fit in with the rich kids from school but it's hard to do most of the time. Most of the time he is lying. While at the vacation estate he hears and see a lot of things happened that surprise him.
This was a fun story to read. It had action, adventure, drama and suspense throughout. There were a few giggles within. The story had a mystery within that was fun to solve.
I received a complimentary copy via Netgalley. This is my honest unbiased opinions.
3.5 STARS
Genre: YA thriller/mystery
Synopsis:
Teens spend a summer vacation at a lavish house on the cape where all the drama follows and one is attacked.
This one fell a little flat for me. I liked the Cape Cod setting and the Boston references. The storyline had a lot of promise but I think it needed a little more action or a bit of a darker side. I wanted more lying and some plot twists. I listened to it on audio and enjoyed the narration. If you are looking for a quick YA beach house summer drama you might give this a try!
This book was very well written and was a quick read to be honest. I was able to read fairly fast and it kept me entertained. It had a development of characters that truly exposed who they are and what their true intentions are. It makes you think about what you actually see versus what is actually happening. There is moments in the book that are thrilling and fun while other portions that are downright freaky. I really enjoyed the novel!

Overall, without giving away any spoilers on this storyline, my daughter recommends this to any young teenagers.
But a fair price for a thriller that you can get your teeth into and pass away some hours.
It has some interesting things to say about assumptions and who we think people are and who we want them to be, expectations, preconceptions, and re-examining these. Also it portrays the pressures on terms to fit in. Few if any of the characters are likeable, which I don’t mind so much, but it meant I wasn’t particularly rooting for anyone. And most of them are very privileged indeed. There’s a fair amount of romantic angst going on for Michael so bear that in mind when deciding if that’s what you’d like to read about.
It’s an easy enough read, but I think I definitely wanted something more from it, just a bit more urgency perhaps, more drama, and even though it was a good length and not overly long as so many novels can be these days, it still took longer to read than I thought it would.
