Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.

Eruption published on June 3, 2024 continues Crichton’s tradition of blending reality with fantasy in a unique blend of science, science fiction and suspense. Each character grabs one’s attention with simple descriptors including “As young as Rachel was – and looked – she was very good at what she did” or “Mac was thirty-six years old and an accomplished surfer”. Short but enough to create an image in the reader’s mind based upon their own experience.
The chapters are short, most just three pages long, with dialogue that moves the story forward. From my writer’s perspective, I find the simplicity interesting. Most books I read offer more depth into character motivations and more details about both characters and settings. However, I enjoyed Eruption because it provided me with an escape from more serious thought and kept me engaged by constantly increasing the stakes and perceived danger.
In the days since Eruption was released to immediate best-seller status, Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai have been attached to direct a feature film adaptation. Considering the on-going Hollywood infatuation with other Crichton stories such as Jurassic Park and Twister, I look forward to seeing the adaptation of Eruption on the big screen.

Just finished reading this Michael Crichton/James Patterson book. I remember reading that James Patterson's goal was for readers being unable to tell where Crichton's writing ends and his (Patterson's) begins. I chuckled at that because it was pretty easy to determine. At one point Patterson begins using very current expressions and refers to electronic devices that have only recently been made available.
The story itself is fun, moves quickly, and does have a lot of interesting information about volcanoes. I also enjoyed the insights about Hawaiian culture. I think many of us don't have a lot of knowledge about the history of Hawaii and just picture hula dancers and surfers, but there is so much more.
Overall, I enjoyed this, but not in the same way I enjoyed Michael Crichton's books. It definitely has James Patterson's stamp on it. I will say that many of the characters are well-developed and believable. After reading this book, I can imagine what it would be like to be near an eruption of this magnitude.
I would classify it as a fun "beach read". I enjoyed it and I think most other readers will too.

This book arrived from my Libby hold request sooner than expected. Once I started reading, it was easy to understand. IMO, hard to put down. The character development could be better, but the story is king and keeps you gong. Special thanks to the Crichton family for getting this completed and to The Patterson enclave for staying true to the original author’s style.

I live in Honolulu and have discovered the Big Island and LOVE it, the volcanos and the town of Hilo, so I was very interested in reading this book. I am a huge reader, at least a couple of books a week, my favorites authors are Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling), Sue Grafton, Alison Lurie, Carl Hassain to name a few. Had this book not been about Hawaii, the volcanoes and Hilo, I would have stopped reading at about 30 to 50 pages, as I usually do when a book is disappointing. I trudged on, bored as I was with the simple writing style and I will admit I did eagerly return to the book till it was finished only because I wanted to hear what happened with the volcanos, Hawaii and Hilo, that is the only reason. No spoiler alert but I think they could have beefed up the ending, like go into more detail about what happened. I think the character development could have been better and I couldn't really understand the background info on the eruption and I know a lot about volcanos. I never read Crighton nor Patterson but I know they both are very successful and have devoted fans so they don't need me. I picked up another Crighton book, "Airframe" and it was better written, maybe Patterson is getting old and tired. Anyway, just manage your expectations.

One hundred and nine short chapters, but the reader feels compelled to continue reading because of the suspense created. I finished in two days. I've gone back to reread the most suspenseful parts. This is not high literature, but popular writing at its best, only marred by a cliché from time to time, perhaps caused by the death of Michael Crichton and the need for James Patterson to finish the book.

This was a very quick read. Overall this was an exciting book and fast paced. I felt the ending came a little quick but still wrapped things up well.

I love both Michael Crichton and James Patterson's books, but for very different reasons. So when I saw that Crichton's widow asked Patterson to complete a manuscript for her late husband, I was definitely intrigued. Crichton's books are always full of science, and I walk away having learned something, and yet he weaves all of that information into a story you can't put down. Patterson definitely knows how to write a page turner, but I have never thought of him as a deep scientific mind. (No offense, James!) Yet, this book has it all. It does move faster than Crichton's usual fair, but I also learned a lot about volcanos and the big island of Hawaii. The result is a book that feels like a cross between the films Twister and Dante's Peak, and it is both fun to read and totally engaging. I definitely saw elements of The Lost World in here too, so it has Crichton's touch. Now I can't wait to see the movie!

It is the ultimate thriller combining the unique storytelling of both Michael Crichton and James Patterson. It was a brilliant decision by Crichton's widow to have James Patterson complete the story. It is truly a story you cannot put down. And, there won't be another one like it.

It was ok, extremely slow in the beginning then picked up about 3/4 of the way through. I'm sure it will be a movie but it just had too many main characters and just characters overall to keep up with. A LOT of characters died, guess I wanted more miraculous saves and surprises that didn't come. The ending was fast, too fast, almost like the writer was bored with it. It was just done, the end.
