This game is a MUST PLAY for anyone invested in the Yakuza series (even if you don’t usually like turnbased RPG), JRPG fans, or those who are interested in a game that expertly balances humor, wit, and emotional writing.
The combat is fun and has depth, every move has unique motions and each character has a ton of moves. You’re not limited in your move set, which is really nice. If you’re looking for a fun, story driven JRPG with turn based combat, I’d highly recommend this. And while the combat is turn based, it doesn’t feel restrictive.
Social links are done in a straightforward fashion, and they’re actually really well done and thought out. Every character has a unique and interesting backstory, and there own side stories that you can explore through advancing your friendship. The scenes were a lot longer than I anticipated too, this game is fun and polished.
Right now it’s on sale for $30 and it’s a total steal for that price. I’ve played around 60 hours so far and it says I’m 73% done. I really have no complaints other than the mini map/map can be difficult to navigate at first. I also wish there was a way to go back and re-read the text of current conversations, but these are just nitpicks. This game starts slow, again pretty similar to Persona 5 in that respect. But it really picks up after the first 10 hours, and it continued to get better and better. Enjoy!
Edit: After finishing the game I wanted to update this and add that while the ending has a satisfying ending, it does leave it somewhat open for a possible sequel in the future, which would have my support. At the very least maybe we could get some after story DLC, but who knows. I finished my play time at 81 hours. I really enjoyed spending time with these characters, and hope that we get to spend more time with them in future installments whether new games or new DLC. You can also free roam after you complete the game, and start a new game plus.
(Second edit) 9/27/2023: They have announced a sequel game that involves Ichiban Kasuga (MC.) Not sure if the other main characters will be included, but I’m looking forward to continuing the story.
All in all, I’d rate this game 9.5/10
I completed the game in around 100 hours and I enjoyed every bit of it. The game has the usual collection of Yakuza side activities, including a cart racing minigame. The post game content is a bit disappointing as the final dungeon requires all your party members to be max level in multiple job types which would involve dozens of hours of grinding. However, the main game has enough content that I felt okay with skipping the "ultimate" challenge dungeon and I didn't feel like I missed much.
