What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School: Notes from a Street-smart Executive Kindle Edition

This business classic features straight-talking advice you’ll never hear in school.

Featuring a new foreword by Ariel Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell

Mark H. McCormack, one of the most successful entrepreneurs in American business, is widely credited as the founder of the modern-day sports marketing industry. On a handshake with Arnold Palmer and less than a thousand dollars, he started International Management Group and, over a four-decade period, built the company into a multimillion-dollar enterprise with offices in more than forty countries.

To this day, McCormack’s business classic remains a must-read for executives and managers at every level. Relating his proven method of “applied people sense”
in key chapters on sales, negotiation, reading others and yourself, and executive time management, McCormack presents powerful real-world guidance on

• the secret life of a deal
• management philosophies that don’t work (and one that does)
• the key to running a meeting—and how to attend one
• the positive use of negative reinforcement
• proven ways to observe aggressively and take the edge
• and much more

You should know this book was nearly IMPOSSIBLE to come by until it came to Kindle - even the paperback at one point was going for $50+ on Ebay. The Hardcover I'd seen for sale for as much as $400!

You dear reader, are lucky to have it so readily accessible now that it has come to Kindle for a fair price.

Why?

Because it is the consummate complete manual on how to be an effective human being.

This book is basically an operating system of how to function in life as an ethical opportunist. A combo of Taoism, the Matrix and Dale Carnegie.

It's not just for business -- however, if you ARE in business, especially personal services or sales, you are losing money, clients and career momentum by NOT reading it...

I digress, not just for business, but in all interactions with other humans. The author gives entertaining stories that are easily relatable, easily digestible, along with fascinating takes on the psychology of human interactions, deal making, and the day to day observations that go into getting what you want from others, especially by finding out how to give them what they want.

Once you figure it out, and start living it, you'll begin to see the Matrix of human interaction, and be able to take advantage of it for *hopefully ethical* personal gain.

Enjoy my good friends, enjoy!

Mark's book provides practical advice and wisdom on the things you can't learn in school, such as interpersonal skills, getting ahead, reading people, and selling with passion. While some of the anecdotes are dated, the advice is timeless. I highly recommend this for new grads and startup founders alike.

This book had a lot of valuable information that I am going to take with me now that I just finished reading it! For the sake of this review I will sum up my top 3 insights:

1)Successful people are dissatisfied with their own accomplishments, always thinking about whats next?

2)Ability to peak their performance, they perform when the lights are the brightest

3)"He never believes he is performing as well as he actually is."

I havent' finished the book yet, about 75% through. But I'm on a roll reviewing products I recently purchased, and I feel like I'm ready to give an opinion on this book. It deserves its reputation as a classic on business. I've already implemented some of the ideas into my own business. I rank it up there with "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and "Persuasion" as having just some great "how to succeed in life" knowledge that is broadly applicable to wide range of situations and should be essential reading to any person who wants to succeed.

This book was suggested by a former co - worker. Having browsed a handful of pages of her copy, I proceeded to purchase my own copy. This book provides me with precisely the kind of guidance I have been looking for when it comes to people and situations. I look forward to finding other such similar books. I have also purchased "Never Wrestle With a Pig". Formal education gives you the basics of a skill and does not equip you with the necessary skills for survival in the world beyond formal education.

I gave my first copy, first edition away to my son. I want to go through it again as it is a GREAT informative read. You may THINK you know all the angles, but then again, read this book.

I think I’m going to keep it to skim more of it because a woman CEO that I admire listed it in her list of recommendations - but it feels really dated. I’m not that interested in going to play golf with a bunch of middle-aged white men as part of my business strategy, personally… (;

One of the best business books out there. Since I purchased this a few years back I re-read it a few times to reinforce and incredibly useful messages. The author's style is great it's like being right there with him as a mentor, and his tips are extremely pragmatic and valuable. He is clearly an expert networker and people person and there is much to learn from him. A must read I would say.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great handy book
Reviewed in France on December 29, 2020
My COO friend recommended this book as I started my MBA and let me tell you...it became a really great handy book that unveiled some of the tricks that are crazy important, not only in business but also within all our interactions with others. It also helps you having a better insight and teaches you how to be more effective. I really love this book, hence my opinion is very biased. Moreover, I tried applying the things that : What They Don't Teach You At Harvard Business School, taught me...henceforth, it changed how I interact with people and at the bottom line, the outcomes are way better than before. Many things seems too simplistic but when you try applying them you quickly realize that the most simplistic things are sometimes the ones that have the best effect. Consequently, if you are a student, like me, if you want to know more about business, if you are in business or trying to start one, this book is a must.
