The game itself reminds me of some of the older Tactical RPGS such as Fire Emblem and Langrisser. There are plenty of characters, most of them are lightly developed with the primary characters having more growth over the game. Gameplay itself is excellent, the game itself runs great on the switch -- docked or not docked. The game also has great music! From a functional standpoint I'm not sure I've played a new game that has been better this year.
As far as the story goes - may be a slight spoiler-ish type comparison. But I see a lot of similarities to how Final Fantasy 16's world was at the state it was and resolved and how horribly it was done. This game has similar beats and did it the way that FF16 should have done it.
Not entirely like it, but similar enough and with its own unique design that is its own style!
The overall design is very well executed and amazing and the characters are so unique and interesting that it’s hard to pick and choose from the wide range you’re given!
Definitely recommended!
One of my favorites in that style was a game for Nintendo 64 called Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber. It was the sequel to the SNES Ogre Battle, which was also a game that shaped my love of the strategy RPG genre. This game is clearly the spiritual successor to those games. It's an auto battler with the strategy putting incorporated before the fighting starts. Set your formations, use items, and Valor abilities and sit back and let it all play out.
The nice thing is they give you an indicator bar for how it should play out. Mess around with the group formation from that point, or change to a different group, it's a very intuitive setup. Use archers to back that group up, and liberate the towns as the world continues to open up.
That to me is the part that makes this game shine even over the Ogre Battle series. The world map parts aren't very complex, but they're a good change of pace and there's always something to find to try to increase your chances of winning that next tough fight. They also don't seem to force anything on you. Battles can be entered and left without putting anything on the line. It's a pretty laid back approach to a game that's not overly challenging, but never feels like they give anything to you.
Anyway, I'm rambling. That's as long of a review as I ever leave. The point is if this sounds like your style of game, don't think twice, this game is one I'm confident I'll still be talking about for years to come. It immediately jumps into the top 10 of strategy RPGs I've played, and maybe top 5 if it continues to build like it has been. Buy it!
The biggest downside would have to be difficulty. I played on hardest available difficulty and it was still a breeze to play. I will come back and play on the unlocked difficulty down the road.
Overall a great game, Vanillaware did it again.
My only downside to the game is there is very little end game events but that is just me being picky.

The story setting is just about as trope-y as it can get, but is done with such attention to detail that despite the tropes it doesn't feel generic. I took my time with side quests and team optimization, and managed to spend 80 hours on my first playthrough on expert difficulty. I have some other games on my list to tackle next but I definitely will be revisiting it for what is effectively the "New Game +" difficulty.
If you happen to be looking for something that scratches the same itch, look into Radiant Historia (DS/3DS) or Symphony of War (PC).
