Purchase options and add-ons

Three hilarious, quirky tales about a young city girl's adventures big and small.

Mitzi lives with her mother and father and her baby brother in the big city where every day is an adventure. Or at least Mitzi makes it one, though sometimes the adventure is more than a little surprising. One day it’s time to pay an impromptu visit to her grandparents. And what will happen when the president comes to town? Who knows what Mitzi will get up to next?

In
Tell Me a Mitzi Lore Segal’s droll dialogue and off-kilter storytelling is beautifully matched by Harriet Pincus’s gritty and colorful illustrations. These are stories that capture childhood in all its puzzlement, resourcefulness, and unsentimental wonder.

mitzi spread

"[The first book I fell in love with] was a children's book called Tell Me a Mitzi by Lore Segal and illustrated by Harriet Pincus. My mother used to read this to me every night before I went to sleep.... I loved it because it was about the pleasures of radical independence and the discovery of the world." —Ottessa Moshfegh

These three stories - which I remembered vividly from my own childhood - became a treasure for my own 3 y.o. In the first, Mitzi wakes early and decides to dress her baby brother and take him to visit their grandparents. Feeding, dressing, elevator, etc. She gets as far as the back seat of a cab, but she doesn't know the address, and the whole story unfolds in reverse. This story is so immediate for kids, because they think they know how to do so much and yet there are certain obstacles they still can't overcome. The other two stories are more of these iterative exercises. The pictures summon a Lower Manhattan where kids sat on stoops and stores sold gum, but the people are dressed for Nixon's re-election. The faces are a wink to the grandchildren of greenhorns.

I received this book when my oldest daughter was around 3 or 4, I think, soon after I gave birth to twins.
All three of my children loved the book, but especially my oldest. We read it and read it and read it again.
Our first copy is completely worn out.

My children are now in their 20's, and we still have 2 shelves of our favorite children's illustrated books.
Tell Me A Mitzi is one of the prizes in children's literature, wonderful stories and wonderful illustrations.

Lore Segal did not write many books. This is her only children's book, I think. Among her very few other books,
My First American was written for adults, but it is also an absolute prize.

My parents read this to me as kid (and I loved it) so I bought it mainly for nostalgia, (not expecting my kids to really like it, since it is not your typical children's book). The illustrations are a little strange, but apparently they have a certain charm since I as a child, and now my own children, really enjoy the pictures as well as the stories. I really was happily surprised that my own kids seem to like this book as much as I did! I wish there were more Mitzi stories, for my sake as well as for my kids!

So simple in inception, but impeccably written and fascinating to my 3 1/2 year old daughter. It perfectly captures the way children think but is secretly and adult book. We all love it, I was surprised I’d never heard of her children’s books, Lore Segel who writes fiction and short fiction. Highly recommend!!
