Hard to believe 2021 has been a good year for video game celebrations. We have had ones that worked fairly well from The Legend Of Zelda franchise 35th anniversary with The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword re-release for the Switch. We had Metroid have a more acclaimed release with Metroid Dread, and Sega had a modest 30th anniversary celebration for Sonic The Hedgehog with the 2021 remaster of Sonic Colors Ultimate, a re-release of the 2010 underrated but well-acclaimed Wii game. But another franchise Sega also unveiled at the end of their Dreamcast and console legacy emerged is also celebrating a big anniversary, Super Monkey Ball. Over the years Aiai and his friends may not have achieved the mass status that Sonic or Zelda have had over the years, but have garnered a more casual legacy that has quietly had garnered a lot of fans through time. Many people wondered which is the best part of their legacy over the years: the marble mazes or the party mode? For me, it is a combination of both. Now a new release does deliver in a somewhat 3-pack, where other 3 packs like the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy does not deliver.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania is a celebration of the franchises 20th anniversary and a good reintroduction to the niche Sega franchise that works mostly well to its ability for new and hard core fans of the marble puzzle franchise. The game reintroduces 300 puzzles from the first 3 titles from the Gamecube and PS2 eras (Super Monkey Balls 1,2 & Deluxe) to a whole new audience. The game has never been as easy as many people may think it is. Trying to get to point-1 to point-2 has always been rough. It varies easily, depending on each maze and path you take. You could also try and earned skill bananas along the way to earn customizations for Aiai and his gang, or use the points to unlock new characters like Sonic and Tails and even customizations options like new stills or the ability to leap to make the mazes a little easier.

There were also some quality-of-life changes that work well for the game for the better. For one, you no longer have a life system, like Sonic Colors Ultimate showed. This time around, you no longer have to worry about restarting from worlds with mazes you completed before to advance, which is a plus. Considered now, you do not have to revisit earlier mazes you mastered in order to advance. Also, the graphics look better than what they have in past titles like the 2006 Banana Blitz the original title from the Gamecube era. You also do have party games coming back that feel more enjoyable and offer a nice breakaway from the frustration of the puzzles. Playing games like monkey bowling, baseball and monkey target is a lot of fun to play, which works well for a nice escape to take time in. For me, I would actually prefer monkey bowling because I liked video game bowling, and this one works in the same computer game style that the 2000 decade Polar Bowler worked. The music also sounds great and feels jumpy and bubbly and joyous even during each of the harder levels which can frustrate you in each level.

Sadly though, there are a few disadvantages with the title though, some of which were from the original games though. For one, some of the controls can be jarring at times for each of the levels. So, one you make the decision on which controller scheme works best for you, you follow it easily in the main game. For me, I preferred using the thumbstick rather than motion controls, which handle better. Also, there is a easy helper mode which can cost you points for each of the levels getting from point-A to point-B, which may hinder the challenges for veterans of the game. However, if you're new to the series or a novice in the franchise that can be a strength around the harder mazes having a guide that can make it more accessible to beat the mazes and slow down the motion to advance in the story mode.

When I think of Super Monkey Ball, it has been a franchise that I got turned off from when it first came out, because the mazes really frustrated me from the Gamecube era like Rolling Gear from level 3 in the first title, and I had to stop enjoying the main game. But thankfully, the improvements really do help in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania. this is a franchise that has needed a lot more care than it has gotten over the years from Sega and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania for the Xbox One & Series X is a better game for what has came out in the end. The franchise is a nice challenge for casual gamers, and while it is no where as close to Sega franchises like Shinobi or Sonic The Hedgehog over the years, it still is a nice game to play in the end. If you love puzzle games, than I actually recommend Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania.

Not that fun to play. Feels like a game that was made 10 years ago.
The multiplayer modes are not fun at all and feel cheaply put together.
It is literally made with a free game engine and plays that way as well.
It should be free or $5.00 max. Truly disappointed.
Total waste of money.

I bought this solely for the party games and the physics are terrible; nothing like the originals. Monkey target is an absolute disaster.

The game is great but the xbox version does not seems to have the reversible cover listed in the description. Everything else was as described. I inspected every part and there is simply no reversible cover.
