'Comrade president, Stellenbosch is a big problem. We know your proximity to Stellenbosch ... we have not elected Stellenbosch here ... we have not elected the Ruperts here.' - Julius Malema addressing President Cyril Ramaphosa in the National Assembly on 22 May 2019

THE BEAUTIFUL TOWN OF STELLENBOSCH, nestled against vineyards and blue mountains that stretch to the sky, lies a short drive from Cape Town. Here, some of South Africa's richest individuals live: all male, most Afrikaans - and all fabulously wealthy.

Julius Malema refers to them scathingly as the 'Stellenbosch Mafia', the very worst example of white monopoly capital. Their critics rail about their influence over the state and the economy. But who are these rich individuals, and what influence do they wield?

Journalist Pieter du Toit explores the roots of Stellenbosch, one of the wealthiest towns in South Africa and arguably the cradle of Afrikanerdom. This is the birthplace of apartheid leaders, intellectuals, newspaper empires and more.

He also closely examines this 'club' of billionaires. Who are they and, crucially, how are they connected? What network of boardroom membership, alliances and family connections exists? Who are the 'old guard' and who are the 'inkommers'?

The Stellenbosch Mafia is the first attempt to not only investigate if this group actually exists, but also to determine whether the town has an excessive influence on South African business and society.

The book is insightful and has opened my eyes as far as Afrikaner business is concerned.
I also learned a lot about the Steinhoff debacle. Christo Wiese’s story is also very interesting.
I’ll be watching for more books from the writer.

Piet makes an effort to be detailed 👌 but he keeps on skimping on crucial parts about how other Billionaire's live,He specifically focuses on Jooste(Steinhoff)and his mates as jerks, but basically praises Rupert and his Remgro crew as being a Exceptional.

I wish he focused more on what beliefs the Billionaire's hold about business and hard work and what they forsee as a way forward to empower South Africa beyond the current affairs.

The Billionaire's in the book provide jobs to millions of people, but I don't hear how they make an impact in Black Communities or individuals around where they conduct business🤔

The book was used to address personal agendas and therefore for me something doesn't settle 😕

I think the author has been bold enough to dig deep into this political inclined topic of "The Stellenbosch Mafia". This is one topic that has always been said without being broken down. This topic seriously borders on historically, current ,political, social and economic aspect of South Africa. EFF always brought up this topic in its political campaigns and to certain degree I feel their story carries a lot of sense, since some of these companies have seriously benefited from the apartheid regime and its policies. This alone gives the beneficiaries of those companies an upper hand in the post apartheid era. The fair part that also comes out clear in this book is that is not every mega company that agreed with apartheid policies, it shows how some companies tried hard to fight the policies. Though it shows that the TTC was not very instrumental in addressing apartheid related issues. I continue to appreciate the authors efforts by bring all these to light.

I found the book gripping. du Toit has a great style, so where some of the topics could have been boring, he links them effortlessly to the overall story. Courageous and relevant.

My parents and grandparents went to school & church with the Rupert's and there's never been a hint of 'mafia-style' business. It is true that people like Jooste don't fit into the culture of a town emblematic of traditional Afrikaner values.
Maybe for his next book, he can have a look at the families involved in building and establishing the City of Gold and the strings they pulled in protecting the old money/British interests during SA's democratic transition --- and what they're doing now to influence Mr Ramaphosa (lots of stories out there about businessmen helping the Prez into his position)

Loved the easy reading, narration and not personal feelings and conclusions
My view is that SA is country on the build and it needs to have all. Misconceptions openly discussed to be able to the rainbow of it's people to trust one another.

I was not aware of the wealth that was mode and lost and this book has brought that to light for me!
I would recommend that you read it because it demonstrates what commitment is needed to build a company the size of Capitec, PSG, Steinhoff. For a company like Steinhoff to bring about such huge loss to the people’s pension and provident fund is very sad. I still find it confusing how it was done!

Decent read that doesn't do enough to expose how the powerful Afrikaanar networks have used their apartheid gained power to shut out black South Africans trying to break into big business and high finance, as well as their complete indifference to issues such as the land question

Insightful, well written but perhaps attempts a little to hard to throw off the "mafia" moniker. Really good read. Finished it in 2 days. Couldnt put it down!

Anton Rupert was a fantastic business visionary..... I worked for the group Oude Meester/Distillers/Distell for 34 years.... His firm support and solid guidance was always felt, so too the encouragement for ALL his employees if you pulled you weight..... I so loved reading this book..... I lived most of it... Well done for having penned it... If one can still use that term...
