It actually does with a few minor limitations! So, I put my existing router into bridge mode and connected this one. I was really happy that, unlike other inexpensive ac and ax routers I've tried, the hardware WAN and LAN port on this one are 1Gbit, instead of the 100Mbit that other use and had limited my throughput. There was one minor issue, which is that the documentation tells you to find the router's home page at 192.168.100.1 . That will likely be true if your router is connected to a modem, but off another router running DHCP like mine is, you will need to check your DHCP table to find it, which is easy, as it's friendly name is something like "WR1800" or some such. Once I found that, I was able to access the main web page, login, change the password, and set everything up.
I didn't really need much setup, but if I wanted to, all the pages I'd need are there from basic WiFi such as turning bands on and off and changing channels to advanced wifi controls, DHCP, NAT, VPN and more. I was disappointed in the firewall interface, which really just lets you decide whether to detect and block typical DoS attacks, but not trojans scanning for vulnerable ports, and there doesn't seem to be a firewall log you can check, either, or an event log for that much. It has port forwarding, triggering, access scheduling and all the usuals otherwise. But, the real thing I care about beyond security is speed or performance.
That was a bit anemic. While what I got was better than products from TP-Link and off-brand routers, I still could not get the performance I already have from my Motorola MG7550 talking to my ancient Mac Mini over 802.11n or my TV at 802.11ac. See the photo. So, I can't use this to improve performance over wifi to the level of what I get at the wall (600 mbps), even in through-wall mode. My signal-to-noise with the Motorola on channel 149 is 25 to 30, where this one got me 12-17. As you can see, throughput was similar. I suspect this is because the Motorola uses beam-forming, where this one relies on proper positioning of the antennas (I did that using a signal sensor though).
All this said, it kinda just comes down to a WOW! price and a router that actually does the job and should even make an advanced administrator happy enough on their home system, though I think most would choose a small hardware firewall to go with this. But, you just can't beat this at the price!

OK, so at $25, this is the least expensive 802.11ax, or wifi6 or almost ANYTHING router on Amazon that actually works well (comparing it to others with 4 stars +). But, does it do the job well?Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2024
