In 1989, South Africa made the momentous decision to abandon its nuclear weapons, making it the first and still the only country that has produced nuclear weapons and given them up. Over thirty years, the apartheid regime had created a remarkably sophisticated capability to build nuclear weapons—both the nuclear warhead and advanced military systems to deliver them. The program was born in secret and remained so until its end. The government initially sought to dismantle it in secret. It hoped to avoid any negative international consequences of possessing nuclear weapons. The apartheid government’s strategy did not work, because too many intelligence agencies knew about South Africa’s nuclear weapons. Faced with intense pressure, South Africa’s President F.W. de Klerk reversed course and adopted a policy of transparency in 1993. However, he decided to hide many of its aspects. Nonetheless, most of the remaining secrets emerged over the ensuing 25 years. Revisiting South Africa's Nuclear Weapons Program draws on previously secret information to provide the first comprehensive, technically-oriented look at South Africa’s nuclear weapons program; how it grew, evolved, and ended. It also finds lessons for today’s nuclear proliferation cases.

The idea that peace can be assured by possessing these weapons is explored in excellent details. Secrets and techniques are a difficult balance to maintain.

Not a bad book. Would have liked more on the test explosion detected of the SA coast in the late 1970's

Very well written. Full of good information yet still enjoyable to read

Revisiting South Africa's Nuclear Weapons Program is a fantastic book, and a great window into what is probably the most unique nuclear weapons program yet seen. The book tells a vivid story, describing the political rationale and technical means by which South Africa designed and developed their nuclear weapons, and details the delivery mechanisms and tactical operational concerns surrounding them, and also describes the disarmament process and verification in fascinating detail. In particular, the book highlights new information about precision guided glide bombs, probably the most capable and accurate delivery platforms ever developed for gun-type nuclear weapons, and unique South African nuclear weapons safety approaches.

Today, as nuclear proliferation is more relevant than ever, the story of the world's only former nuclear power is a deeply interesting and powerful one. I highly suggest reading this book.

- This book has excellent information; however, I have to give a poor rating because of the print quality. I have seen the original book and all the pictures and diagrams are in full color. The pictures and diagrams enhance and complement the research information. However, this book version is a print-on-demand and the pictures, charts and diagrams are in B&W and not very clear. Also, it appears it was printed in a hurry, like a bootleg version that you can buy in a street kiosk.
- If you care only for the info, I'll recommend you get this book because it is well researched and has a lot of useful information. However, if you are like me who also seeks a visual appreciation to complement the text, look for the .pdf version available in some internet sites and download it.
