Survival, resource gathering, and crafting in an interesting car-focused setting
This is the mini-review I posted to social media. It doesn't touch on some of the game's best qualities (the setting, the interesting soundtrack selection, etc.) and that one of the best assists is to turn on the option to keep all found resources when failing a run (it's a pain otherwise, but probably good for the most hard core of players), and that gameplay is both inside and outside your car, but should give an idea of the experience I had with this game:Had I known this was a run-based survival, resource gathering crafting game, I probably would have skipped it. Somehow, I expected an RPG open world driving adventure. It won me over, but it took time.Even in the "easier" early areas, the game throws a multitude of hazards and dangerous road/weather conditions at you, which only get worse as you make runs deeper into the fictional Washington state Olympic Exclusion Zone, where mishandled scientific experiments have messed up the laws of nature. Thankfully there are options to turn on some assists (free repairs after a successful run, adaptive triggers off, and more), although the best options are more like cheats (no player damage/death, no car damage) and those disable PSN trophies. It took a while to click for me, but then I enjoyed it.

My nephew really likes this game. It's really unique and interesting, and he loves that. He likes all the exploring you have to do in the different areas. I personally really like the "mood" of this game. It's a mix of a lot of different things, but I like the suspense, tension and scary aspects. It's not like a horror game, but it has just that right amount of excitement, for me, that really makes me want to keep watching or playing it with him. The customization is very good, a lot of things you can change, anything from the paint scheme to the actual physical look of your car. You also do some base building, mostly just collecting parts until you can add a new machine that gives you more and different things to customize. Overall, a really good and fun game. My nephew has already beaten the game, but is replaying it to try and explore everything, so a lot of replay ability here. Hope this helps anyone thinking about this game.

Pacific Drive is Stranger Things in a station wagon. It's wonderful. If you're a fan of all things mysterious and weird (Alan Wake, Control, etc.), you'll feel right at home with this one.

I was hooked within the first hour. Everything about the game begs you to keep playing and discovering more about the exclusion zone, why it exists in the first place, and the people behind the disaster.

The soundtrack is great, the acting from the three main characters is top-notch, and the overall audio/visual tone is fantastic.

The tension while driving in the various parts of the zone is pallpable, and trying to escape the collapses is always exciting and tense, no matter how many times you end up doing it.

Tons of accessibility options that let you completely customize the experience, including FOV sliders (this is something more console games need to adopt). The developers really deserve kudos for going the extra mile here.

I won't go into a ton of detail (there are plenty of reviews out there for that), all I can say is that this game comes highly recommended.

The options in the game are there for a reason, use them. It's fun to drive around without worrying about damaging my car or activating storms so easily.

Don't stop playing this game just because it's too hard when the game gives you ways to make it easy and cozy. You can ignore the danger and focus on the story and customizing your car.

I do wish the game had more interesting map areas to get out of the car to explore. You have to get out to get supplies but for the most part there's no point to staying out of your car that long. I wish there were clues to people living in these places you explore. (Like, the clues in the Fallout and The Last Of Us games where you explore for supplies.)

Pacific Drive is an astonishing debut from Ironwood Studios. It mixes survival and rogue-like elements into a cosmic road trip where you must battle the elements (both natural and anomalous) in order to find your way out of the mysterious Olympic Exclusion Zone in a fictional walled off portion of Washington State. It’s a lot of mystery, a lot of driving, a lot of “oh-god-no-no-what-is-that?!” and most importantly it’s a fun and exceedingly well crafted game. Plus it came with pretty much every major LGBTQIA+ flag decal for your car! So many beautiful rainbows!

I was a bit skeptical of this game at first. However, I just purchased a PS5 and beat two games on it already, so it was time for something new.

This game requires a huge learning curve, and may turn some people off to it entirely, but if one sticks with it, it is definitely worth it. I am still learning, but enjoying every minute of it. It hasn't frustrated me to the point of quitting, surprisingly. Most games, or anything else for that matter, that isn't straight forward, and requires so much learning, I would have given up on a long time ago, and more than likely returned for a refund, but to my surprise, this game has me hooked, and I'm having quite a fun time learning how to craft certain objects and repair my car. Of course there's much more to it than that, but I'm not going to spoil the plot.

It reminds me quite a bit of Roadside Picnic, which I recently started reading again just because of this game. I'm positive the developers took much inspiration from that book. I know there are plenty of games inspired by Roadside Picnic, Stalker being one of the most obvious, the Metro games based on the novels by Dmitry Glukovsky who's novels were turned into video games (the developers of which are Russophobic/Russian hating Ukrainians). But this is neither here nor there. This is about Pacific Drive.

So just like the book, I feel like a Staker exploring the "Zone" which is exactly what it's called in the book as well, not to mention just like the book, the map can change from second to second, and harmless looking objects that can fool one, but cost one their lives if not avoided properly). I love this game, and highly recommend it to anyone who digs sci-fi adventure/survival games.

Also.....whats with all the LGBT crap surrounding this game. Does your sexuality have anything to do with it. Making a great game is all you should be PROUD of. It's pretty amazing. But since you had to go and emphasize ideology and political agenda into the game, it would be nice to see other flag stickers too. Actual countries would be nice. All of them. Let the player express themselves in that manner as well. Whether it's their nationality, ethnicity, or just a country/nation in general they like and have interest in. That would be great.
